Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

We had never heard of Whittington Castle, but saw a signpost to it as we were travelling down the A5. Well, could you resist!

We were utterly delighted when we found it.

There was a small car park at the rear thronged with people wearing high visibility jackets and carrying brushes, spades. etc. They proceeded to set to work on the gardens. We later found, from the curator that they were volunteers, and this is the only castle in the U.K. owned and run by the community. It is a credit to them all.

There has been a castle on this site since the 11th century, though there is evidence that occupation of the site goes back much further. A link here provides much useful historical information.

My photograph shows the remains of the moat and the gate house.

Thank you for your visit.
Have a great day, Bev :-)

Post script - I have just noticed that this is the first posting from Whittington. This must be coming a trend!!
