[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Hey this photo was taken at the same time as my previous photos of the same subjects. Looking back through my photos looking for something different to post I noticed this one with both subjects in the distance. There was a lot of uninteresting sky and grass in the photo so I cropped it to a panorama.

I realise that this is a bit small, to fit in with the 800px limit, and also that the large post isnt as detailed as it could be. I think its because I was at full (optical) zoom on my camera and then I cropped the image also, If im ever back in the area I will try a bit closer without the zoom to see if the result is different.

Im not best pleased with this photo, I think the only thing I like is how the photo is balanced by the tree and the tower. Because im not pleased I would like your tips for improving, either in post processing or things I shoudl have considered when taking the shot originally.

Mark -

You say your are not pleased with this image and I can see why. I viewed your gallery and you seem to have a good eye, attention for detail, and good understanding of exposure but this one image seems to just a tourist sanp (ouch! I guess should not have said that). I personnaly do not find the image very interesting with all of the sky and foreground. Some foreground element might have helped, also I had to look for the ruin - it is a bit dark, masked by the trees, and does not standout. Maybe if the ruin was a single feature like the tree and not masked by the woodland the image may have worked, that is in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing

Mark- I dont fully agree with Jwmunro, this picture as he stated is yes diffrent then most of the things you shoot, but I like it, call me weird... call me American ;) I dont know but it's nice it's almost like looking out at and african savanah, I love the DOF, and the contrast with sky and grass.... the tree adds for GREAT composition the tower doesn't do much for me.. it doesn't take away from the picture but it doesn't add... all in all I like this picture and it's worth the 2pnts!

I think I agree with Ashley that the tower doesn't add anything because it is set against the trees and you have to look for it; whereas the tree is set against the sky. Apart from that there's not a lot there. I loved your pic of the tree on its own. I think we sometimes have to accept we enjoy a piece of scenery but there's not enough for a photo. Like the heather on the moors the other day; it was simply beautiful as far as the eye could see, but I had to search out something to add interest to a photo. I don't think I'm saying anything you don't know yourself Mark. You're a good photographer, so don't sell yourself short. We are often influenced with our own photos by what we saw and felt in that place; the task is to convey that to others so in analysing our own shots we have to stand back and try to be objective. Sometimes we succeed other times we don't...

hi mark, i think its difficult to make a good shot when you have two features you want to be included. especially when they are so far away from each other, your shots of both individually are very nice, but this just lacks something, maybe if you had walked round to the right of the tree and backed up, you could have the tree in the foreground and the castle in the background? i think this would be a good composition, and with the sky you had, it would look nice! what do you think of that?

A GREAT COMPOSITION !!!!.... BUT I have to say that it´s a bit dark in specific elements that u mentioned, as the tree and the tower, they don´t appreciate wery well.

hugs MArk,

alejandro

PD: but I dont have any points for today.

Mark, nice picture. I like this landscape, because it has a very strong colors and the frame you selected helps to see more composed. Good one.
I like the little tree at the right side.
Congratulations!
Sergio

Hi Mark,
The basics of this photo are good. The photo is a bit dark (and like you said, a bit undetailed, the bigger version at least.)
Maybe something intresting is missing. Some running horses or something would have been nice. On the other side, this landscape just looked like this.

I think I understand your note. I sometimes also photos which don't satisfy me so much like this one for example: http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/Denmark/photo169604.htm But sometimes you have a very shot that satisfies you a lot, and sometime you haven't.

Maybe go back to this place could be an idea, maybe it looks different on anotherday with different light or maybe with snow ... or with some cows. Or forget this place a bit and just continue to take photos on other places, when you discovery a new golden photo moment.

Hope this helps a bit.

Stef

Hey, it's been a while since I came across a large photo view and tries to click on that. I agree with your note concerning the quality, but the real quality is in the subject after all, and somehow that doesn't seem to be impaired by the lack of sharpness and detail. It simply all ties in, the title, the place and the quality.

Hi Mark,
also I want to take part of this discussion. But I see it a little different. I like it as it is. I 'm not talking about pixels but about composition. And I see a beautiful land. On one side the lonely tree and on the other side the forest. I find this contrast very nice. Because the left side of the picture is a bit dark, the lonely tower is not visible enough to disturb me at all. Even if is visible is exactly on oposite place - like the mirrored tree image in negative. And I like also that the grass is turning from very light green to dark green near the horizont. Yes I like it.

Hi Mark, I really like thi composition ..I love this extrme horizontal crop ..and the dark lights on the foreground evidences very well the tree..cloudy sky is also beautiful..
Really welldone !!
have a nice day !!
Fabio.
