[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Well I am back from Leeds Festival, check out my intro page to see how it went!

This is the second photo from Staithes a week or so back, I took this stood on a jetty or harbour wall after walking over all that wet sand you can see in the photo! I thought it wouldnt be too bad but I got my feet wet! Also in the middle of the quicksand I met another photographer who was out to enjoy the relitively tourist free staithes in the early morning. He was using b+w film and we had a chat about technology the benefits of going digital etc, and how staithes was a brilliant little village for photography. Anyway he went one way and I went another and this was one of the best shots I managed. i woudl have loved to have got a similar shot from the ground but it was just too wet so I didnt even try!

I think it shows village life quite well and I like the reflections in the water and how we can see that staithes is a sheltered bay. Technically the only thing I dont like is how some of the houses are overexposed.

Still correcting overexposure is not somethign I am good at. If anyone can tell me how to correct this, without changing the colours in the rest of the photo, or making the houses look unnatural I would love to know : )

Staithes is a peaceful fishing village which is like the land that time forgot, everything in it (apart from the cars!!) looks as it probably would have 50 years ago, its brilliant walking down the narrow streets and seeing how all the residents take brilliant care of their houses and small gardens making sure that everything looks nice.

Everyone who I passed in Staithes was friendly and met me with a typical Northern greeting ranging from "How Do", "Now Then" and "Alright", none of these greetings actually require you to tell the other person how you are, its just like saying hello, and saying the same back will ensure you remain friendly, usually a tilting nod of the head would also suffice of you are out of breath from walking up a hill or something :P

As always comments appreciated. Im a few days behind in responding to critiques so please be patient with me, I will get back to you eventually : )

Mark, very nice village and photo. I think the focus can be better but the other elements are very good. The point of view is very poetic and the colors are great.
I like the background with that buildings and the frame selected was very fine.
Thanks
Sergio

Nice shot, Mark !
Beautiful view with a amazing POV showing the low tide in a very different way.
The small boat balances the pic very well.
Regards,
Celso

Hey! You're back; a good job I was trawling through the gallery and I was alerted to your return. Sounds like you had a good time; now you will need to catch up on sleep never mind critiques.
Good Staithes shot I have seen similar but not so far out, probably at higher tide. I particularly like the reflections in the wet sand and the low-level light has picked out interesting shadows on the houses. To keep dry you should have taken your shoes off and rolled your trousers up; then all you would need is a knotted hankie! :o)
Well done
kath

Wonderful typical English scene. Nice crop, but the quality is not so good. The original will be better I guess. Putting on TE is not so easy without losing to much sharpness.
This is a pity this time.

Hej Mark,
This is a great shot again! The reflections in the water look very nice and special because of the little amount of water. You also got a very nice light in this picture, well done again!
Hilsner,
Lars

Mark you sacrified your shoes for us. Let me thank you ;))
You've caught really nice quiet village here. And the composition with this small boat in right lower corner is just fine. I don't mind for the overexposed houses but I'm not so sure about the sky if take it or crop it because it has really nice colour and it adds an extra dimension. But my opinion is to crop it away to give more interest to the houses. Anyway the blue of the sky is presented also in the reflection so the blue colour remains. TFS

Its always interesting to look at your photos and try to figure out why you shoot like you do. I like the vertical and in your mind it had to be so from where you stood. The boat had to fit into the foreground and it added balance to the bottom section. I see the refections of the houses in the water puddles too. This adds alot to the photo as well. Shooting in morning light is always the best time too. If I could improve one thing it would to have a higher tide so the white buildings would have more reflections to fill the sandy area.
Great shot and cheers.
Thanks so much for your comments on the sunset photo. I shot it ar F22 with a pretty long exposure. I think this is the sharpest way to go. The Rebel 18-55m Kit lens is a little soft but works better at F8 and up.

Welcome back from festival Mark!! ..beautiful composition here ..with evocative appeal... i really like the broken reflection in the low low low level sea...and the contrast of white houses and coloured little boat to the dark colours of the rest.. very well composed!!
ciao, Fabio.

Hi Mark,
This is a powerful, well composed scene which works very well in the portrait format. The colour, lighting, contrast and clarity are all excellent. I like the various layers of interest as the eye wanders upward in the frame, from the smooth sand with its great lines and reflections up to the village buildings and then to the hills beyond. This is first class work. Great capture.

Hi Mark, great shot, very well balanced. thanks for sharing, well done!

Ged.

h imark i was at staithes last week and out along the harbour wall at high tide, not wet sand though i had to walk across the rocks to get on the the jetty. took similar pictures to this but differnt because of the high tide, no boats sitting around, were you zoomed on this one? as some aspects of the picture seem a little sharpeded, though ithink the only way to correct your exposure would have been when you too it, and its too late now, and i know you cannot tell from the screen on the camera.! over all nice shot nice llighting nice composition and colours. nice!

How Do, Mark
What a note. To skip the things you know all ready about the note, composition , POV and colors which are very good,
The white being overexposed…( it is a bit and it can be adjusted on WS)
If you have a histogram, on your camera do the following
Make a picture and look at it if its flashing that there are high light in the range adjust the Aperture ( when there is too much highlights adjust to a smaller aperture a big F number)

Have a try and let me know

The low tide makes this an interesting and unusual photo. Unusual because I seldom see a place photographed like this, and you still amnaged to show the reflection. I was closely observing the residences. Some are bretty big houses. Very nice photographic documentation of a village.

Thank you for your comments on my photo, "Golden Gate Bridge."

Again, this is a nice one. Think this place is just a dream land for photographer.

Well done!

Very nice shot Mark,
I like the way you put the boat in the forground. That way the mud, sand is put in focus very nice. The white of the buildings is sticking out very nice as well. Good job.

Hi Mark,
Very nice photo. Great POV and composition. Colours, details, light and the reflections on the "mud" are fantastic. Good job

Be well,
António
