Something different today, and I know its not going to be to everyones liking! Its a photo taken during a Kasabian gig at the Leeds Festival. I spent the whole weekend in tents like this full with people bouncing up and down to bands, and wanted to capture the atmosphere on camera.

It was a lot harder to do than I thought, there was no chance of using a tripod with all these people so i had to do the best i could with faster shutter times. It was erally hard to get the correct focus. The effect I was after here was not a photo of the band, but all the hands in the air silhouetted against the stage lights, i think it turned out OK. But then again I would say that, I took it and this photo is a memory for me so when I see it I remember the day.

I hope this gives some insight to what the festival was about, lots of people all with a passion for music having a good time bouncing up and down to the music, hands in the air!

Comments, good and bad always appreciated.

I presented the photo like this on purpose, I didnt want to concentrate just on the people but I wanted to show how the light fades to nothing at the top of the tent, I hope I achieved this well.

Back to normal tomorrow I think :P

Very effective at evoking the atmosphere imo.

I'm glad you presented the shot as you did - complete with a slight tilt to the left. I think that lends the picture some character.

I know that having been there the people pumping their fists would make quite an impression - but to my eye I actually prefer the play of light on the ceiling of the tent.

All in all a great shot- thanks for sharing.

Now then Mark,
I'm a festival goer myself, so I know what you mean, nice one!

Ged.

OH YEAH!! great impact here.. the large space on top of the composition gives to it a great dimension.. and the silhouette of the audience creates a perfect rock performance feeling!!! ..I love the way that you have composed it..compliments!!
ciao, Fabio.

The darkness certainly gives this shot a rock/gothicy feel, and yes you have conveyed the size and mood here. I can imagine the problems you had in the darkness.

These kinds of shots are always tough in my eyes,
When is something too dark ?
There is the screen calibration and there is the taste of the photographer.
I see very little details( I see a band in the distance, but I don’t see hand in the air)
I do see the special light on the top of the tent ( I like it) and the supporting pillars and both do give a good effect
BUT it is in my eyes a bit TOO dark.

You are learning and you dare and you are open for critics and for that ill give you a big smiley

Ishai

Hi Mark concert shooting is very hard and your result is very nice considering what you set out to do and the circumstances that you had to deal with. It's certainly very atmospheric and also nicely graphic. I guess the pic would have also worked with 100 pixels less at the top.
I don't think it's too dark but it's reaching the border. Interesting job!
Regards from Rotterdam, Bert.

Hi Mark:
Beautiful darkness. i like it. Beautiful theme and idea, very incredible shot.
Good colors, the shadows are great.

Hej Mark,
Well, I like this shot and recognize the problems you had, cause I was to a concert last Friday and tried to take some picture as well, which was very hard. But I think you have a good shot here and I especially like the composition, well done.
Hilsner,
Lars

Well I see Mark that you caught something creative in this night exposure. I love the bolt of light shining up on that framework. You did well here. Cheers Paul

not sure if im too keen on this one marky, i didnt know some of the acts were in tents for one, i thought they were all open stages! the long format is nice and the light on the tent ceiling, i think you could have cropped a bit off the top and there seems to be dead space on the bottom too, but that could be my monitor, its not too great contrast wise, you cant see too many hands waving, did you try to see what a lower POV would be like? it gives a nice atmosphere and would look just as good in B&W, not my type of picture but its got a good ambiance :) 2moz

I like 'cos if nothing else, it's presumably a photo of Kasabian on stage. And as you may or may not know, Kasabian are a band from Leicester and also are fellow Leicester City FC supporters like me. Ow and they are awesome both Live and in the studio, so all in all nice shot, ow and you lucky boy getting to go to a summer festival.

hi mark
just browsing through your pics when i came accross this, having been to a lot of concerts i know how hard it is to get a good shot with the crowd bouncing around you. i havent seen kasabian but i got the album a few weeks ago which is great
anyway well done to get a shot like that
