[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
This photo was taken on Redcar Beach last week, I had just been to get a DVD for my sister in Redcar and the light was nice so I went to the beach to see if there was anything interesting going on. I was actually after kite surfers or windsurfers, but theese two ladys bowling provided me with a subject.

They were playing bowls where you have to get your balls closest to a point, rather than ten pin bowling, so dont ask where the pins are!

I think that the fact tha ladies both had red tops and black trousers on is quite funny and makes them look like some strange two headed lady! i would rather have just got one bending down to bowl on their own, but they stood like this until they had both finished, and then swapped ends.

I quite like the lighting on thsi photo, I have played with curves and contrast but nothing drastic. I also like the ships on the horizon, its like they were placed there on purpose because they are exactly in the right place! The ships are waiting to go into South Gare, of which I may post a photo tomorrow if I can get my post processing to make the photos look presentable!

Nice shot. It's almost as if there is one lady with a hugh behind. I the contrast in the sky, sea and beach are nice. The red of the lady's is giving a nice contrast with the natural tones of the surroundings.

The composition is nice, but not your best ever (imo). Not sure why, but I think it's because the scene is not as unusual/uncommon/special as your usual shots. Hope you don't mind.
Regards, Frank

ciao Mark,
your photos have always a particular fascination..
this one have wonder colors (fantastic red details) and contrast..the POV is perfect and the ships in foreground gives to the composition a great deph..
have a nice day!!
Fabio.

Was the sea really that dark? Frank is wrong about it not being an unusual shot. In all my time living here by the sea I have never seen two (elderly?) ladies playing bowls on the beach; I think this is a very incongruous sight, and would have merited a closer view. I think an angled shot would have been better composition-wise and then you would have a nice diagonal shoreline.

I really like this Mark,

It's simple, with strong lines and colours, and 'says' something.

Well done, nice capture.

I like it for the straight horizon, mark
There is something very special about the horizon here (maybe it’s the color change between the sky and the sea)
The composition by it self is good (Circ. Polarizer did its job good)
The two ladies are very good and a must in the composition together with the colored balls ,but I would wait a bit for one of them to change position ,this way we can really see the two of them
It well composed with a lot of space

Ishai

Well done with the red touch and the position in the framing.
So thaty we have the complete game :))
I like this composition.
Compliments

Great composition and contrast Mark,
I like the yellow and red balls on the light brown sand, and the ships look unreal. nice one!

Ged.

Hi Mark. Very nice find indeed with the two old ladies indulging in the beachside bowling. I like how they are placed in the very corner and how their red shirts add such a vivid element to the frame. Good use of horizontal layering for the compo, and a delightful add with the distant ships on the horizon. You can also be happy about the way in which the special light setting is rendered in your photo.

Hej Mark,
The two women are great here indeed and you were lucky with their cloths as well. The rest of the picture is also good, nice you had the ships as well. Good work.

Hi Mark;

Great composition of the ladies in relation to the target at the other side of the frame. Nice backdrop completes it well...

I have to say- I had a bit of a chuckle at first glance of this shot (before reading your note). It was only upon further inspection that I noticed that there were two people, and that was someone elses behind. :-)
We play this game back home in Canada; it's called Bocce (pronounced 'botchie'). Here's a summary I found from www.bocce.org;

"The sport is played with one small ball (Pallino) and eight larger balls [Bocce (singular), Bocci (plural)]—four for each team. The Pallino is thrown first and becomes the target. Then each Bocce is thrown with the goal of placing it as close to the Pallino as possible.
A full game of Bocce is called a Round, and it is seperated into a series of scoring periods called Giri (plural) or Giro (singular). The team that reaches nine points first wins the Round (15 point Rounds are used in international tournaments)

In each Giro (scoring period), only one team may score points. A point is scored for the team with its Bocce closest to the Pallino, and additional points are earned for each Bocce of the same team that is closer to the Pallino than the closest Bocce of the opposing team. Hence, if all four Bocci of one team are closer to the Pallino than any Bocce of the opposing team, four points will be scored for the winning team and none for the opposing team. The team that reaches nine points first wins the Round."

I must admit, it doesn't sound very exciting- but it is a lot of fun at family BBQ's etc...

Cheers Mark!

Nice shot Mark, well spotted and well captured.

At first glance, the two ladies do look like one peculiar person and it brings a smile to your face. I like the composition and the fact you captured 2 tankers on the horizon. I agree with Kath, it's not a common site on Redcar beach.

I like this unusual composition:
my eyes are drawn to the stark line along the horizon to the two ships, then down to the two ladies in red (nice touch!)... and I want to follow to where they are looking... the yellow balls and the tiny red speck of the red ball. Humor and color- great combination!

petanque in french i believe, played it on hols a few times and beat a few french people at their own game, but its not ever i have seen two old ladies playing on redcar beach! good capture, composition is good too, it would have been better if they were each wearing different colours, red and yellow to match their balls perhaps! haha well seen and rendered, im suprised at the sea though as is everyone else!

Looks like one of those multiple exposure photos where the camera snaps a photo every few split seconds and we see the ball moving:) I like these kinds of views, Im a huge fan of beaches and the sea, and this is a wonderful place. Id love to run on this beach, Im a big running nut. Good contrasts, very nice colors.

Hi Mark,
this is great. I like this composition in blue with some red notes ;) I think that this shot is really nice and particulary filled with the "holliday's finished feeling". TFS
