[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
This shot was taken a fwe weeks ago in an early morning run to Whitby for the sunrise, was a bit cloudy and the sunrise wasnt as spectacular as I'd hoped, but on the plus side there wasnt many people on the pier, as I was walking across I noticed how the wood looked like it had finger prints, and thought if I got down low I would be able to capture how they looked.

My first idea was a top down abstract type view, but then when I realised I had the green tower in shot I coudl play about with DOF, my first deliberate messing about with DOF so I hope it serves its purpose. I have a few other similar shots but in my opinion this one turned out most like I wanted. I only wish that the fences on the sides were equal, my camera wasnt tilted so I can only assume that effect is because I was more to the left hand side so I could capture the tower without it being behind the right fence.

The green tower by the way is flanked on the right hand side (as we are looking) by a red tower, they are used to show boats and ships which side of the harbour to enter/exit. Similarly if you see a boat at night it will have a green light on the front and a red light onthe back, so if your in another boat you cna tell if they are going toward or away from you!

*** Update ****

I added a different version to the WS with the tower in focus, which do you like better?

Great perspective here, Mark
Nice low point of view with good details
I like the fence leading us to the water tank

Well captured

Ishai

Hello Mark
we really have to see your name under the miniature to see this pic...
what a surprise! excellent point of view, lots of details, great use of the DOF...all good...
do you do a PP?

bye

I love the low POV, the composition and the detail in the planks. I'm sorry to be picky though, as I would have prefered the tower to be in focus too. From your note it seems you wanted it out of focus, but I think it has too prominent a role in the composition not to be in focus; ie without the tower the distant out of focus wouldn't bother me. That's where hyper-focal distance would come in, that we were discussing the other day. You don't say what your DOF was, but if your focal point was 1/3 of the way down the pier with a wide DOF, that should have done the trick and still had the foreground planks in focus.
Sorry. We've had the "harsh" conversation before so I won't go into it again.
Cheers
Kath

Nice POV and composition. I like the very detailed wood graoin and it vanishes towards the tower. Those wood gaps are pretty wide!

Also, thanks for your comments on my photo, "Three friends".

Nice shot Mark,

I like the low angle you have used which highlights the grain effect on the wood as you were hoping.

Personally I prefer the WS with the tower in focus as the composition leads your eyes too it and the blur doesn't work for me in this case.

Hej Mark,
Very nice experiment, the low POV is very good and so is the DOF (maybe a little bit too good ;-) ) Nice morning and perspective. Well done!

hi Mark nice angle here. I have done the same with railroad tracks and found out that the higher the F stop the better. But in this photo its nice to have the background blurry so I focus on the texture of this rough lumber that is very well seasoned. Good shot.

Good shot Mark,

Great low POV, the composition and the grain and the bolts in the timber . I prefer the workshop version with the tower in focus. Nice one!

Ged.

Well done study, and good purposes in working this subject.
I definitly appreciate better the WS this is my own point of view.
The reason is that the green tower is attractive and tells a story, the short DOF is also good but much more a photographic declinaison.
There is a third composition I propose, keeping the excellent framinf you have...
Its to cach while standing on you fet ans fixing the upper part of the frame at the top of the tower, with a small aperture >f6 and a reasonable time of aperture (longer) to have an Hyperfocale effect giving sharp on all the distance, to my point of view it will give either the artistic side and the expective evidence of the tower...
Anyway I like it

Mark:
excellent way to catch the road. I like the dof that you taked in the background. It's a very nice picture. Congratulations!

Mark I like this shot. it reminds me a lot of what I like to shoot, low down shots... I think the picture would have been stronger with more focus through out the shot, see on my camera this is easy to get..'cause I can choose what I want to focus on... but as I know you have the same camera as steven when using this I know its really hard to obtain.... all in all It's a good picture a good idea, just more practice.

Hi Mark, very interesting how you focussed on the structure of the wood of the pier. The way the pic drops outta focus works very well from me As a added bonus it also gives a feel of infinity to this picture, which fits it very nicely.
A little xtra crispness would give this nice some xtra oomph. I tried it with an 66% 4,0 pixel USM and it worked well.
I prefer this one above the WS.
Very nicely photographed!
Regards from Rotterdam, Bert.

Hi Mark. I prefer this one over the workshop, just because I appreciate that you tried something different here and the shallow DOF is a bit less conventional than the pin-sharp details all the way to the back. The low shooting angle also works well on this one as far as enhancing the textural details of the wood and the curving perspective towards the back.

Nice shot Mark. I like the DOF on the front of the bridge. Makes a very interesting composition. I think I like the workshop more since a vertical shot puts more enphasis on the vertical lines in the wood of the bridge. Good job.

Good interpretation of Whitby Pier. Wide angle certainly works very well with this subject. Depth of Field handled well to add impact.

Hi Mark! good shot . I like the perspective of your photo! very good composition!

I like this one, your note clearly expressed what you were trying to achieve. What I like the most is than even 50% of the picture is unfocused. It still looks great!

Hi Mark,I have been missing out on some great shots in your gallery lately, this one is real nice with great lines and textures, well seen and taken.
Dave.
Ps my brother Jeff at jsec on TE has some great pier shots you may like to see.

I like the unusual POV and the differential focus adds to the scene. Well done, Paul.
