[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
This is a photo of Mallyan Spout, a 70 foot waterfall found not far from Goathland, you may know Goathland better as Aidensfield from the popular TV series Heartbeat.

I have been thinking recently about getting some waterfall shots done to give me something a bit different to photo, and remembered this one I saw as a child.

I drove to Grosmont and walked along the Rail Trail to Goathland and then on to the Spout. I stayed at the spout for a while taking shots, playing with settings, shutter speeds, aperature, positioning and this is the best I came up with. Im disappointed to say the least as I thought I had some really good shots, but still its a learning curve and im a step further than I was before!

The falls are quite tall (I got the 70ft quote from a website about a hotel named after the spout) and so i couldnt get it all in shot, I treid for a few panoramas, but im not sure if they will turn out.

anyway comments always appreciated, good and bad, but please if they are bad and you know how I coudl improve let me know!

I think in this shot maybe I could have included less of the foreground rock and more of the top of the waterfall, however it was brighter at the top and made for a messy photo :P

I met a couple of other photographers who went to the same Uni as I did and if by some chance they see this I woudlnt mind seeing your photos of the subject!

I forgot to post the image details:

F-No: F/2.8
Exposure: 1/2 sec
ISO ISO-100

I have also just been informed (and i cant believe I didnt spot it myself, because it wasnt a deliberate on my part) that my waterfall is tilted!! I have a WS ready to post tomorrow, which corrects this and also has slightly different colouring, a bit moe natural perhaps.

Hey its no fair. You have better waterfalls than I do. I love this scene with its deep color and the water falls in such a unique way by dripping off the moss. Good work Mark. See my tractor post next to yours. Cheers Paul

Hi Mark,
Very nice composition and POV. Nice colors and light. I like the way the water seems freeze.
Regards, António.

P.S. Never shooted waterfalls so technicaly i'm a little usefull here

Great shot Mark,
nice colours and texture. Well done!

Ged.

Excellent composition with beautiful colours and lighting. The low angle is fantastic, making this picture very impressive. Good use of slow shutter speed. Splendid shot!

Regards John

Very nice waterfall. I love the way you put the waterfall so that it fills the whole composition. A nice welcome change to the usual waterfall shots :). Actually, I didn't know they had waterfalls this big in England.
Good job!

You haven't told us your shutter speed and aperture Mark so it is a bit difficult to say what to do instead and as you know I am also experimenting with waterfalls too. I notice you used your polariser. All the ones I used the polariser for were far too dark and this looks a bit dark at the bottom. It looks like tricky lighting conditions with brightness at the top and dark at the bottom. I wonder if a graduated filter would have helped. Also did you deliberately tilt the shot as the water should surely be vertical. I think it might be worth having another go on a dull day. It seems to be one of the few subjects that works better without too much light.
What did you do in PP?
You've made me want to try it too.
Kath

Nice shot Mark, I'd never heard of this place but it looks like I'll have to pay it a visit.

I like the composition of your shot, the effect of a slightly slower shutter speed and the contrast of colours between the waterfall and the surrounding green.

What was your shutter speed?

Great effect with the waterfall. Using the slow shutter speed has made them appear as streaks, almost like icicles. Nice rich tones in the greens and the crystal blue water. Lovely picture, but then I am a sucker for slow motion water shots. I think the tilt adds to the comp.

Hej Mark,
Wow, this is a great capture of this waterfall. It looks really great. The surroundings are also very nice and I like the PoV you chose, well done!

Lars

Hey Mark,
This is a really pretty and refreshing shot. The bright green moss looks great and gives the photo that real dense rainforest feel. I also especially like how the water flows over the rocks like thin strings of glass. You captured the depth very well and I like the composition. Excellent work!
Claudia

Have just been looking through your collection and there is some good stuff in there. I love the way you have used the longer shutter speed to turn the water into 'icicles'. Great colours and detail too. Well done.

I am still trying to work out how you took this and where that water is coming from but it is a stunning shot.Technically it is spot on but it also has a surreal feel about it with the transluscent feel of the water and those fabulous greens.
