Another shot from my walk in the moors the other day, this was taken in Grosmont, I was on my way across the Rail Trail, when this train came past, I was lucky I was in a good spot. For once I'm quite pleased with one of my own shots, it doesnt happen often so I'm hoping this one gets a good response, but please dont let that put you off being honest.

I think a train lends itself to a landscape shot, but because I wanted to capture the steam I used portrait, there is a fence just out of shot on the right too so that would have spoilt the wider shot.

Now what can we learn from this shot? Well I am reliably informed from a friend that this is a "Black Five" mixed traffic engine. This means that it was designed to be able to pull both passengers and freight quite easily, it was designed by the LMS and William Stainer. They were "born" in 1934 and helped tremendously with the war effort. 18 escaped the cutting torch and are "alive" today! Thanks to John for this info!

Comments always appreciated!

Hi Mark, this is great. Excellent POV and perspective and DOF. Nice.

I didn't have to read your note to know the when and where of this one Mark! This is an excellent photo and the portrait format is just right; there is not a wasted cm. in this shot. Well done.

Well Mark I love the balance you managed to capture here. A great old train that appears to be in great shape and what a puff of steam too. You captured what you wanted and the results are a pleasure to view. As always Cheers ~~PAul.

Hi Mark
I agree with your choice of framing - it would have been absham to crop away any of the nice plume of steam. The angle of the railway track and train gives nice perspective into the distance, and the colours are nice and clean.
Regards, Susanna

Excellent photo Mark,

The diagonal lines of the railway track draw your eyesight into the photo and you did a good job at catching the steam.

Hi Mark,
A great photo of the train coming straight at you; nice composition, well done. The steam looks like a cloud.
All the best,
Anastazija

I was lucky enough to get tothis line back in the Spring and got some nice shots. This is really excellent and you are correct that the portrait composition works well, technically the shot is also spot on with good exposure and sharpness. As a mewcomer to TE it is good to see some quality Steam p0hotography here

This is a real beauty! Old steam-trains are really appealing with a lot of “personality”.

Regarding the photo, the vertical framing works perfectly because the steam cloud fills very well the sky. Without it, the sky would be too empty and due to the strong colors would draw too much attention. Still I would like to see a bigger connection between the cloud and the train. Maybe a second earlier this could have been achieved. A good idea is to set the camera to burst mode and after choose the best composition. Nevertheless it’s quite good as it is.

Also the vertical format works very well by placing all the attention in the engine.

The exposure is great as well the clarity colors and sharpness.
