Hello everybody!!
The weather is still horrible here, so I’ve decided to open the book of brilliant things, to tell you what happened quite a long time ago, when it was raining of course. I was at my local pub after dinner for my usual good cup of tea along a good whiskey to make it stronger. With me the usual well known good fellas playing darts, pool and drinking beer. At that time if you wanted to find me you should have known my table was right behind the door on the left side..the dark side of the pub it was called. Wind outside was blowing strong as hell and the rain was washing the soul of lonely people having nothing better to do then go to their local and drink and talk about cars and politics. That night I was in a good mood to talk about everything, but not cars or damn politics; I thought “cm’on fellas let’s talk about music, women, literature, history or...photography!!! why on earth anyone doesn't want to talk about photography??”
While my mind was blown thoughts and thoughts and thoughts away, a stranger came in: he was pretty young and totally soaked through. Crabman asked “what can I get you stranger?”
“double whiskey with lyme”; “Ice?” Crabman asked..”No, lyme” the stranger said.
“what da hell is wrong with you pal?” I thought; but after a while I knew. he was what you would call an “artist” type, you know? long hair, strange clothes and that sort of things. He came and took a place at the table right in front of me, in the area we all known as the grey area.
“Hey, what’s up buddy?” he asked.
“And what it's to you?” was my reply.
“Chill out man, just asking” he said.
Southerner, he was a southerner, his accent...I was sure 100% (I know, I’m pretty clever sometimes).
“What da hell are you doing here up north?” my question
“I’m trying to find inspiration to write a song, a great song”
Bloody hell, he is a musician, I thought. David was his name, and after a chat i can say the lad was ok. He was very confused after he didn't see things eye to eye with Roger, his band mate. He’s got such brilliant things going through his mind but he was totally stuck, so I decided to help him out..Karma that night was sitting on my shoulder. He wrote something and he said “this must be the intro of one of the greatest songs ever”
“let me see” I said and bloody hell, if it was so damn good.We don't need no education
We dont need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom...
and then?? what then?? but he was depressed and incapable to carry on with the job.
I'd had my 4th cup of tea, double this time and the 5th whiskey, double ..
“A pen..give me that bloody pen” I said........
Bingo, the inspiration came to me strong as the tide of the North Sea and I started to write Teachers leave them kids alone Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone! All in all it's just another brick in the wall. All in all you're just another brick in the wall.

I was pretty happy and sure that it could have been a great song and, btw, I had found the title “another brick in the wall”..
“How cool is that?” my answer
“Pretty s**t” he said, and even more depressed he walked away.
I was puzzled, how could I not help that young lad chasing the dream of his life?
Anyway, after a couple of years I was pretty happy listening on the radio to the song of that young lad..and I knew the rest of his name too. David Gilmour was his name and the band’s name was Pink Floyd..have you ever heard something about this band? If not get a cd and enjoy a great piece of music!! I tell you!! Oh..and you know what? his band mate Roger was in the band too..Roger Waters was his name..even if after a bit they had made up again, he still left the band..pity!

Time passed by when a night another stranger came in; I’ve told you that I’m pretty clever at recognising strangers, didn’t I?

Stranger “a Pisco Sour please”
Crabman “a Pisco what?”
Stranger “Pisco Sour, you don’t know what A Pisco Sour is? Are you kidding me?”
I presume this was some sort of a spanish cocktail as his accent was definetly Spanish.
Crabman “Listen to me mate, this is a local, not a puffy posh bar...got the message?”
But Crabman was a nice soul and after a while he found the recipe for this cocktail and made the stranger happy.
I was as usual on the dark side of the pub and of course the young stranger came and took a sit at the same table when David had sat; do you remember David, do ya??
We started a little conversation when I discovered he was from Peru and actually living in London. Mario was his name
“What are you doing for a living?” he asked me
“Nothing” my reply
“Cool” he said
“And you?” I asked
“I’ve just finished my studies and looking for a job”
“what job?” I asked
“Don’t know, I wanna be a photographer” he said
“Cool, do you know something about photography?”
“I ain’t got a clue” he said
“I’ll teach you then” and he seemed very happy
I spent a couple of weeks teaching him all the things I knew about photography but he didn’t seem really impressed and convinced.
“Maybe I should do another job, photography is not for me”
But I insisted and after a couple of phone calls I managed to arrange a couple of interviews for him. He left Manchester and I’d not seen him since until I saw him on the telly in an interview, years later. It was him, I was sure and the name..Mario..I was so pleased that that guy had finally found his way. He became a pretty good photographer and one of the best jobs he did was for the Princess Diana (God Bless)..his name was Mario Testino as far as I can remember.
Now, time to close the book of the brilliant things and get back to reality.

Do you think I’m crazy? Well I’m not, I’m just flipping out guys!! Still the weather sucks and I can’t stand it anymore; I can’t even try to plan something which means no picture and I’m suffering..a lot!!

About the pic: this is a panoramic view of Salford Quays taken from the Imperial War Museum. Pretty nice area don’t you think?

While I’m listening “On the turning away” (Pink Floyd...this song is a masterpiece) I wish you all the best and see you around!

P.S: a special thanks to my friend David and Mario. Guys I’m just kidding of course and I thank you because while I’m stuck and waiting for a weather change, along with the TE friends.....you are making my days!!

Hello Igor,
Your pov is very good. Clear and sharp throughout the scene. The blue of the sky obscured by the gray clouds adds a lot. Tfs.
Regards
Metin

Ciao Igor.
Comunque bellissima.
Bobo.

really enjoyed reading the note, exactly what need on this gray and cold morning here in NYC :)
those clouds are definitely promising some more rain, but I really like the light here, you've caught that very special moment when the light is truly luminous, I like it a lot. my only comment would concern the lower left corner - I feel a bit more space between the edge of th frame and the curve of the construction would be an improvement, but that's not a major point. superb clarity and detail here, very nice work.
best,
Kristine

GREAT COMPOSITION.....I LOVE THE BRIDGE......

Hi my friend,

this image has such a great atmosphere. Even better is to read your note (or book). Life is made by those remarkable situations and/or imaginations that will be always in our minds. Beautiful story...backing to the compo, I really like the clarity of the scene even with that cloudy (and attractive) sky. This is what a call a complete post. I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for the inspiration you provided me :)))
Regards,
Carlos

Hi Igor,

We had some good days this last weekend! Some nice sun, which was very welcome with carnival here.
Hahaha, what a great note! I read it like a book. Well, with such a length it was necessary to treat it like a book ;-). Very funny. I should come your way and hang out in that pub to have you putting me in the right direction when it comes to career choices :-).

Greetings! Dennis

Hi Igor,
I don't know whether this will make you feel any better but it's pretty lousy weather here in Italy too (if the Po valley counts as typical Italian weather!). I don't remember when we last saw the sun...
This is a wonderful view with typically British clear blue summer skies. Not a cloud in sight! As always, everything is very sharp and detailed with nicely saturated colours and the overall image displays your trademark drawing-like clarity.
Like Kristine, my only comment concerns the framing, which feels just a tiny bit cramped both to the right of the bridge and in the left corner, though on reading your reply I see there wasn't a lot you could do about that.
I know this is unorthodox but I also wonder whether it might have made for a stronger composition if you had placed the horizon dead centre, giving equal importance to both the sky and the land. I used to hate mid-frame horizons but I've been reappraising them recently as I see that some photographers use them regularly to great effect. Just an idea :)
Thanks for sharing the story too.
Hope the weather improves soon!
John

You have a lot of imagination and...an eye to compose a great shot. Your POV is well chosen and the sky is superb. There is sharpness throughout the picture and there is a lot of depth. Congratulations, John.

Ciao Igor,
Bravo.
ciao
andrea

Hi Igor,
The sky on the left looks a bit strange, but on the right he is very good.
The cutt-off curve at the bottom left is also a pity, but i see you had already a very tight framing. But without these minor things i like the overal pov and the way you presented it in a colour toning that i like a lot and remembers me on projects i did a very long time ago....very nice.
Regards, Henk

Marie

Hey Igor, rain is obviously good for you, it gets the creative juices flowing. If you ever get stuck on photography, you can always take up writing. Very entertaining little piece of fiction. Speaking of rain, it's been steady this year in Sydney of all places, this is supposed to be dry this time of year, but we keep seeing these British grey skies.

Anyway, on to the shot. The composition is great. I like your positioning for this shot of the Salford Quays, the buildings and city behind have been sharpened nicely (very good clear work), the colour is good, your sky for the most part is very good (those clouds are good for something eh?), the only part that might be a little dodgy is that blue in the sky on the left, looks like there might have been a bit of a slip on the selection in your PP process in that area. Overall though a very enjoyable shot to look at.

Thanks, John

hi Igor
to me it's honestly a bit too much...
i like PPs when we don't see them..
here we do.

besides, the framing is really good and deserves a better weather..

come on , be patient and show us another one

hello,

Ciao Igor,

Bravissimo!

Hi Igor,
Great view over the city. Excellent POV and composition. The clouds are beautiful, some look rather threatening with rain, but it's nice there is also a bit of blue in the sky visible. The light conditions were pleasant too. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Igor,
You show us a again a great atmosphere direcly related to your mastering of post processing. I like the way you worked the sky to render this great atmosphere. Would jsut have needed a bit more space on the lower left corner.
So this image is very good but what a pleasure reading your note :o)
This was just a few words to try and cheer you of this horrible weather you are suffering from...

Hello Igor,

I can see why you've wanted to present Manchester in beautiful weather. In my time at Oxford, I remember six weeks during which the sun did not appear, and my mood was echoing the poor weather. Excellent note with the exceptionally good photograph from the top of the Imperial War Museum.

Warm and bright regards,

Hello Igor,
nice your story about Mario Testino, from the your book of the brilliant things. Now about your panoramic shot. It's an excellent one with a great depth of field and a lot of things that everyone can see.Marvellous the clours and the light but the best of all i think is this huge sky with these superb clouds.Informative your note too.

Igor,
is this now the place to post shots or to write prosa? Both are pretty good! On the image I wish you had the 17-55mm lens to include the last protion of the bend at the left side (and don't use this critique as an excuse to buy this lens too!).

Ciao Igor,

Hi Igor, i don't remember to have seen such a long note on any picture posted on TE ;) Sorry but i didn't read it, hope you won't mind ;)
The picture speaks for itself and you turned this view into a tremendous one using all your skills in PP. The extra bring of saturation (red touch and blue on the bridge) are what caught eyes in this extra polarized view. Metalic view, this is Manchester ... wish them to loose in football tomorrow ;)
Excellent picture

Nice photo but a great stream of consciousness that's worth 2 points all by itself. Go and get wet. Get yer camra wet an' all. Call yerself a Manc?

Seen Pink Floyd twice. Amazing band and can still blow away 99.9% of the crud that's round these days. No substitute for class and ability.

Hi, Igor. I think you could write novels. You're really gifted to create an atmosphere. You also manage quite well as a photographer ;o). You've chosen a very good POV here which leaves lots of space to that superb sky. The buildings are well brought out by the sky and by the river on both sides of the island. Good colours and light.
Have a nice evening,
Philippe

Hello Igor
Don't know which to comment on first, the picture or the note. Well written, I enjoyed reading it..you do write very well indeed, reminded me of my friend Chris (prezntime) who also writes well. Excellent wide view which includes lots of details to savour, like the play of shapes & designs. Good saturation on the colours & the sky has become more dramatic as a result. Well done!

Hello Igor,
The cloud terribly matches to the cityscape taken at the exquisite angle. Primary colours of red green and blue there is in places, attract notice.
I like really this mysterious tone.

Ciao Igor,

Hi Igor,
nice light in that harbour scene which looks pretty different to what I would call a harbour as it is very modern but has interesting architecture. I like the composition with the bridge crossing the water (what else should a bridge do than to cross something?) and that dramatic sky.

Ciao Igor,
Gran nota y bella foto.

Great story Igor, But i think the weather is getting to you, maybe you should retreat to a warmer climate before you completely loose it:))))

Great shot of Manchester, maybe the weather in the UK isn't always the best, but at least you got plenty of nice dramatic dark clouds there:)

Ciao Igor,

Good work here Igor. The right placement of the horizon line and then of course lots of room for the clouded sky - a most attractive result

Hello Igor -

This is a very nice image but there are a few minor things that kind of stick out. IMO, the tip of the island really should have been included and there should be just a little more room on the right edge of the bridge. This would have allowed you to fix the obvious vertical problems on the bridge and the building on the left. The left side of the sky looks a little odd but not to the point of saying it needs to be fixed. Overall it is a very nice scene, I like it. Well done!

Thank you for sharing.
