Dunluce Castle, near Portrush is a late-medieval and 17th-century castle is dramatically located on a basalt outcrop that drops 100 feet into the sea on the north Antrim Coast. It is believed that the castle was built or (possibly) rebuilt by Richard de Burgh or one of his chief followers during the Anglo Norman period in Ireland. The site certainly was occupied as a fort before this time,
The most colorful occupier of Dunluce Castle was Sorley Boy MacDonnell, a Scottish chieftain whose clan established their dominance along the north coast in the mid 1500s, he had many differences of opinion with Queen Elizabeth who sent Sir John Perrottt here in 1584 to bring him to task but Sorley evaded arrest. He is also reputed to have mounted four cannons salvaged from the Girona along the castle walls. The Girona was a Galleass of the Spanish Armada which foundered on Lacada Point at the Giant's Causeway in 1588
In 1639, while the second Earl and his Countess were here, part of the castle including the kitchens fell into the sea; seven cooks went with the kitchens but an itinerant cobbler was said to have survived in a corner of the vanished room. It is said that the Countess refused to live in Dunluce after that. The 1641 rebellion saw the castle sieiged by an Irish army and the surrounding village burnt, the castle held out under the command of a Captain Digsby and was relieved by the Earl. Most of the Scottish settlers and merchants escaped to Scotland before the village was destroyed. General Munro arrived here in 1642 with a large army, some thousand foot soldiers, two troops of cavalry and field guns - he is said to have arrested and imprisoned the Earl in Carrickfergus, ransacked Dunluce and other castle belonging to the Earl as well as burning Glenarm.. The Earl re-occupied Dunluce Castle after 1666 and lived there until his death in 1683. Source

Hi Pat,
I like your idea of showing the strong contrasts of this place but I am afraid you have cropped too much of the forground. Nevertheless it is an interesting composition with beautiful colours and a very interesting note too! TfS!
Best regards

Hello Patricia,
Wonderful deep blue ocean which contrasts very beautiful with the green and even better with the much softer blue sky. Glad there are some clouds, without them it would be boring i think.
Nice crop and framing also, a well thought image...very nice work.
Regards, Henk

This strong sea blue indicates quite deep water which is consistent with high cliffs and no beaches seen. It is also a good colour transition between the nice soft blue on the sky and the bright green of the FG. That thing about the ISO happens to me too but in my case I am the only to blame. I simply forget to change and most the time it is already too late!. Do not worry. Well done.

merhaba dear pat

Hello Pat,

Strategic location with a magnificent view!
What is left of the castle makes an eye-catcher on the cliffs by the Atlantic, and I notice the wonderful blue of the ocean...
A well balanced composition, where the whitewater adds life!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Pat,
Beautiful seaview with deep blues and greens. And strong feeling of history, that castle looks good even as ruins. The weather looks good but I can guess the wind was still strong. I don't know how much work you did to hide effects of high ISO, but the result is crisp and clean.
Kari

I assume you must have used some kind of noise reduction as at ISO 2000 this is impressive for lack of noise. Very well composed image with the inclusion of the foreground cliff top and the cliff on the right. Good ratio of sky to ground/sea and lovely colours. I see you had some sun. I didn't realise you spent much time in Northern Ireland.
Kath

Splendid view on this castle. The sharpness and the clarity is impressive, as the light and the colours. Well done.

Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Pat,
Beautiful varying shades of blue to the pastel sky and the deeply vivid sea which make the perfect backdrop for the battered old castle to stand on. Wonderful detailed foreground of contarasting greens.

Hello Pat,
really a nice synthesis of this picturesque seascape view with the castle to predominate of this part of the shore line.I like the colors of the sky as the contrasted ones of the whole scene. You have right about 'traveling with family is NOT conducive to good photography',especially when you have and kids with you.Never mind it's a good photo.

Regards,Danos

Beautiful colors, nice framing! Thank you for sharing! Regards Stella

Hello Pat,
I like the entry of the sea between the castle and cliff. I like also the proportions of the image and his colors. The stones patinated by time are superb. An excellent exposure, beautiful colors. Cheer.
Have a nice day

Ola Pat ,
Que paisagem linda a beira mar os tons de azul ficaram fantásticos , gostei muito do castelo em ruínas tem belos detalhes , bom enquadramento da foto ,bom contraste de cores, parabéns!!
Um abraço Gonçalo

Hi Pat,
You have caught perfectly the Irish environment in this composition, in which the ruins of the castle creates a bit of mystery in this magnificent landscape.
The deep blue of the sea and the sky they are a very beautiful and elegant backdrop, and I like the green touch of the vegetation in FG.
A splendid photo.

Olá Pat
Regardless of ISO, this is a great picture. I just would like to see a little more of ground at right lower area of the frame.
A picture that I'd expect from Irish or Scottish landscapes, with the bonus of some blue sky.

Hi Pat
This looks good! The framing is excellent with the castle off-centre, with the small cove & the superb blue sea in the BG. Maybe you could have boosted the contrast a bit on the castle...just my two pence thoughts. Well done otherwise!

Hi Pat
I feel some similitude between Ireland and the Cornish part in England just for the landscapes only.
Very nice picture.
You should try a panoramic version.
Best regards

Hi Pat. I hear those Nikons are pretty good at high ISO! ;-) Nice photo. Well balanced composition with good colour and detail. Excellent note also. Thanks for sharing.
Have a good weekend, Paul.

wo-ow, ISO 2000?! before looking at the exif data I was guessing 800, may be 1200... but definitely not 2000, which goes to show how good Nikons are :))
love the photo and love the note, especially the story about the kitchen falling into the sea [although I might not notice if that happened to my kitchen, I'm reaaaly lazy cook ;)]
interesting how the fairly narrow horizontal formal creates a feeling of wide open space stretching on both directions, I like that a lot. the white waves nicely emphasise the deep blue of the sea, and leaving the edge of the cliff adds a good depth to the scene. nice one :)

regards,
Kristine

Gorgeous composition and colors, Pat. I like the somewhat high contrast here. Regards,

Hi Pat,

The views in this country are breathtaking and there seem to be a castle near the water most of the time. Your image is very pretty. I like the way you framed the castle against the horizon. The colour of the water add a nice ocntrast to the warmer tones of the ruins. Nice work Pat :-)

Roberto

Daer Pat,
I come back in your gallery because I had not seen this one. A very nice mix of nature and old architecture.
The dark blue colour of the water is really nice.
Good composition!
Cheers,
Marianne

Hi Pat,
Wonderful scene... The colours, lighting and point of view are excellent. Very well done.
All the best.

Hi Pat

love the strong contrast and saturated colours, would like to have seen a bit more of the foreground, but still nice as it is.
