From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Glenmalure (Irish: Gleann Molúra) is a valley in the Wicklow Mountains in eastern Ireland. It is a u-shaped glacial valley, with only one road leading in or out, which connects to the 'Military Road' (Ref: R115) at the mouth of the valley.
Historically it contained the stronghold of the Gabhail Raghnal branch of the O'Byrne clan at Balinacor. It was the site of the battle of Glenmalure in 1580, when an English force unsuccessfully tried to take Balinacor - at that time home of the rebel chieftain Fiach MacHugh O'Byrne.
Glenmalure remains a remote location. It contains a youth hostel and is a popular site for camping. It is close to an Irish Army artillery range in the Glen of Imaal. Shamrock Rovers former ground in Milltown in Dublin, was named Glenmalure Park in the 1930s by the then owners the Cunninghams, who had family connections with Glenmalure.
