Photographer’s Note

Mount Ağrı which is the highest mountain in Turkey has many different names such as Ararat, Kuh-i Nuh and Cebel ül Haris. It comprises the Great Mount Ağrı , 5165 meters and the Little Mount Ağrı, 3896 meters. Great Mount Ağrı is the highest mountain of not only Turkey, but of the Anatolian Peninsula and of Europe as well. The summit of the mountain is covered by glaciers. At the altitude of 4000 m snowfalls start and the vegetation continues up to that altitude. There are many legends about this mountain coming from the past . One of these says that the Noah’s Ark rests here upon which Frederic Parot realized the first ascent to Ağrı in 1829. Today people dealing with mountaineering climb Mount Ağrı at certain times of the year in the summer and in winter.Transportation is provided by road from İstanbul and Ankara as well as by air. In other words the nearest settlement to the “Highest point of Turkey” is Doğubeyazıt. Here there are hotels and pensions offering accomodation to domestic and foreign tourists.
