Photographer’s Note

Ahlat is a historic town and a district in Turkey's Bitlis Province in Eastern Anatolia Region. The town is situated on the northwestern coast of the lake Van. Ahlat is famed for its Seljuk period graveyards, whose magnificent architecture and stone carving have led historians to describe it as the land of the Seljuk renaissance. These tombs number among the greatest monuments of early Turkish civilisation in Anatolia. This graveyard is situated on a 210.000 metersquare area and contain more than 8000 tombs. The history of this graveyard date back to the 13th century.Most gravestones are stand-up type, a meter and a half or even two meters high, with geometric patterns, in some cases with pictorial elements. The length of the tombstone is an indication of the social esteem of the deceased.
Efforts led by the local administation are presently being made with a view to including the tombstones in UNESCO's World Heritage List, where they are currently listed tentatively.

Ahlat'taki Selçuklu mezarlığının bu kadar büyük bir alanı kapladığını tahmin etmiyordum. Yaklaşık 210.000 metrekare alandaki mezar sayısı 8.000 in üzerinde.
Ahlat 1230 yılında Alaeddin Keykubat tarafından Selçuklu topraklarına katılmış. Bu mezarlığın tarihçesi o yıllara dayanıyor.

Hi Ugur,
Your very low POV here emphesizes the foreground grass and the monuments look very impressive this way. Attractive colours and a very beautiful landscape in the background!

Three of the monuments rise well above the others, probably some persons of significance buried there..!
An eye-catching composition, where the wild flowers enhances the feeling of peace and quietness in this place...

Merhaba Uğur Bey,
Ahlat denince Selçuklu Mezarlığı akla gelir.
2005 yılında oralara gitmiştim.Çok etkilenmiştim.
Mezar taşlarının heybeti, üzerindeki yazıları,onca mezarlık insana bambaşka duygular yüklüyor.
Fotoğrafınızla aynı duyguları tekrar yaşadım.

Your low POV is excellent showing the grass and wildflowers in the foreground. Very interesting old gravestones, which seem well preserved considering their age.
