Photographer’s Note
Part of a series of photos from east Turkey, this is about the very important place that the grandmothers have in the daily life in those areas : what would they do without the helping and caring hands of all those grandmothers ?
After * grandma is rocking us to sleep,
* grandma is preparing breakfast and
* grandma is looking after us, here a grandmother is working with 2 of her granddaughters to milk a herd of sheep in a yayla near the Iranian border. Each one of the trio has a specific role to play, repeated every day (the girl in blue is pushing one animal at a time to the girl sitting who is maintaining the sheep strongly to prevent her from moving).
"Yaylas" are high pastures where villagers with large herd of cows or sheep migrate for some months in the summers : here is a general view of this particular "yayla", with some further explanations.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
* grand mère prépare le petit déj and

Hello Catherine,
A fine glimpse of daily life in eastern Anatolia and the close relationship between people and their animals. An important reminder of the strength of traditions in large parts of Turkey, easily forgotten amongst the modernity of Istanbul and Ankara.

Hi Catherine
A superb daily life shot, with excellent sharpness, colour, & pov. I like the arrangement of the 3 central figures in a triangular arrangement. Wonderful tonal contrasts, with the lighter sheep drawing attention to the centre. Tfs!

Hello catherine,
a wonderful & idyllic scene you`ve catched.
Do you knwo how we call our Kurdish women who go to high plateaus with the sheep?
Berivan; they milk the sheep on high plateau.
Unfortunately the actual situation (war in the mountains of the East) does not allow us to hold our traditions.
However, thanks for this shot!

Bonjour Catherine,
Amicalement,
Pierre

Bonjour Catherine,
I really am amazed by your stamina, by your urge to travel, see, and photograph. Wonderfully composed and superbly shot. The use of light, the colors and sharpness are truly impressive. The stick on the girl's hand leads us to a superb depth in the upper right, and the photo is superb allover.
Je vous shouaite un excellent weekend. Amities. Salvator.

A very vivid depiction of a way of life, Catherine, just what TE is all about! It's clear from their poses that what these people are doing is everyday stuff for them. The land, the animals and the people are all integrated, and the generations are integrated, too. They all look a little shy and yet comfortable. There's some kind of feeling in the shot of understanding between them and you, across the cultural divide, that is cause for optimism about human nature. Regards, Ken.

Salut Catherine,
