Photographer’s Note
(A following of this better photo, a few hours earlier in the same house).
Noisy : I was actually mesmerized by what was happening in the far and aimed primarily at the moon crescent = just perfect above a mountain of dried cowdung + at the dog who did not seem terrifying but IS nonetheless towards strangers (also trained to fight wolves) : an unusual apparition - even if not allowed of course inside the house (this family has 5 dogs, another one joined him at the doorstep later on, =>you can see the 2 dogs here !)
=> therefore, the rest of the photo is unsharp, a bit tilted and also noisy, the noise was anyway prevalent with the TV very loud and the many children who were very active and demanded constant attention .
Messy : it seems very messy but in reality there are strict rules in this family and if the woman cook finally joined us, the other female members were not allowed near us - as in so many other places, I was eating only with the ‘master of the house’ (and not his spouse who was nonetheless near him) and the 3 little boys while all the others watched : they would eat at another time…
Everyone in its right place, only the reverred cat is free to wander according his inspiration.
Funny : I found the whole situation rather comic, eating only potatoes with tomato juice as this relatively rich family wanted me to eat mutton with them but it is about 30 years that I don’t want to eat meat (only under torture) ; so, not really a delicious dinner and I HAD to accept this invitation and would rather have slept right away in my sleeping bag inside the mosque (my headquarters for the nights in this village) ; but in the same time, the little boys were very comic, the whole situation a bit surreal and I was just waiting to leave, laughing in silence about what I was witnessing. Very friendly people who tried to do their best to please a foreign visitor. Sometimes, one wonders : ‘what am I doing here ???’
(NB : I struggled a lot with this photo (colours, sharpness) and I know the result is not great, you may not like it but the whole series that I took in that house is very close to my heart !)

As a element of series - pretty well done. Together with a previous one make a true story.
Regards.

Hello Catherine,
technically it has flaws, but who cares? It means something to you and to us who follow your travels.I like to read your rather breathless note making as they demonstrate how you put your heart and soul into your travels. In anser to "what am I doing here" well, keeping us all fascinated for one thing!

Hello Catherine,
To my mind, what's close to your heart always beats technical perfection (within reason). It's a funny, chaotic picture, as a composition a total mess :-), but this is that kind of scene that you just cannot compose. I love the hands digging in for the food, the women at the back staring at you, the TV that no-one bothers about, the guardian dog (a friend of mine was attacked by one of those dogs in a Turkish village, luckily it wasn't rabid), and of course the tiny moon crescent.
Best wishes,
Gert

who cares about the quality of the shot when the subject itself and your note are so very good! you have unforgettable experiences and share them with us; that's what counts here.

Salut Catherine
Interesting contrast between the sharply defined parts of the image, & motion blurred sections during the comparatively long time exposure. Tfs!

Salut Catherine,
Tu reste un mystère pour moi! Tu t'introduis dans la vie des gens et puis te fais oublier pour faire tes images... Un vrai don, j'imagine.
