Photographer’s Note

In the small village of Somkaya (about 40km from Dogubayazit, east Turkey), coming out of the Coranic school accompanied by several girls that you had seen before, I noticed that in the sunshine the light cotton veil of one of them was playing nice shadows on her face.

The girl, seeing that I would take her portrait, took off her veil and posed with her hair free but after having explained that I actually liked the effect, she wore it again ; her friends became a bit jealous and each of them wanted to get her portrait with the same shawl.

This is the last of the series of shots.
In that village and in that area, headscarves are not worn by everyone, unlike in the north east of the country (from Erzurum till the Black sea coast).

Hi Catherine! What a lovely capture. I love how the girl is framed offcenter and slightly looking away from the camera (perhaps looking at her friends?). The sharpness also locks our eyes on her and the shadows of the veil that fall on her face just frame her face perfectly. COngratulations!

I like your short story and the big warm smile on the girl's face. We can easily believe that she feels like she is the winner, and there's no shadow in this joy except that the veil create like a tribal tatoo on her skin under the sun. Well done.

Bonjour, chère Catherine,
J'ai beaucoup aimé cette galerie de portraits présentée en atelier.
Il faut qu'il y ait une certaine communion entre le photographe et la personne "croquée" pour donner à la réalisation une vérité.
Ici, encore, la photo est d'excellente qualité (vous maniez avez talent le Canon Ixus 850 Is).
Très bel éclairage et le cadrage est choisi avec soin.

The shawl is perfectly knitted or wowen but the owner of the shawl is sooo pretty in the WS, I really liked her dark hair and blushed cheeks. It seems you had a nice sincere conversation with this girl - as always- that's why she gave you a big, sincere, naive smile. Thanks for sharing.
