Photographer's Note

Here is an interior shot of Yeni Valide (New [Queen] Mother) Mosque. We were there in between prayer times, so there were not many people saying their prayers, just one fellow who must have been saying extra or make-up prayers.

The calligraphy inside the mosque was the work of Hezarfen Mehmet Efendi (Bursa, birth date unknown - Istanbul 1740), a famous calligrapher and pen master. He learned calligraphy, especially the writing of thuluth and naskh from Kürtzâde İbrahim Efendi. He completed his education with Hafız Osman (tutor to the sultans Ahmed II, Mustafa II and Ahmed III, and was esteemed by Sultan Mustafa II, who held his inkwell as he wrote) in Istanbul. He became famous as calligrapher, illustrator and limner (master of illumination).
