Photographer’s Note
The ancient Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami) of Diyarbakir, Eastern Turkey on a hot Summer day. One man kneels in prayer, many others sleep peacefully on the carpets of the mosque's gallery. A striking illustration both of the social function of the mosque and its relaxed atmosphere. That one could sleep in a mosque would not have come easily to my mind....

Hello Jelle,
Mosques are often all-purpose institutions. Not just for praying, but for socialising, resting, doing homework, discussing urgent business etc. This particular mosque brings me certain memories, because from this gallery someone threw a large stone at me that hit me in my back. There was an American military base outside the city that wasn't very popular among the Kurds, and they probably thought I was American.
Well, that was almost 40 years ago.
Regarding the composition I might have considered cropping away the nearest man.
Kind regards,
Gert
