MAGICAL SHORES

Few travel experiences can compare with sailing through the storied Bosporus into Istanbul. The city with 3000 year-old roots straddles two continents — Europe on its Western shore and Asia on the east. The Crystal Serenity, on which I had been cruising during the previous three weeks, had just visited the Black Sea ports of Yalta, Odessa and Constanta, and was about to dock in Istanbul.

The photograph shows the European shore, with the immense fortress, Rumeli Hisar, built in 1452, standing sentinel. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (or the “Bridge of Mehmet the Conqueror”) connects the narrowest points of the strait. At the time, chains were stretched across the waterway from Rumeli Castle to a small fortress on the opposite shore, for the purpose of preventing ships from coming to the aid of the beleaguered Byzantines. That was 556 years ago. Two-thousand years earlier, Phillip of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great, had lashed his ships together, and created a pontoon bridge at this spot, allowing his forces to cross into Asia Minor.

On the hills above the castle is the campus of Bogaziçi University, once Roberts College, with the most beautiful view of any university I know of in the world. Over the years, I’ve visited the institution to give a number of lectures, and always departed mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty.

The 1510 meter long bridge (1090 m between the towers) Fatih Bridge completed in 1988, is the newer of a pair of bridges that connects the two shores of the Bosporus. The other, Atatürk Bridge, was completed in 1973 and is about 5 km south of Fatih Bridge. At the time of its completion Fatih Bridge ranked as the sixth longest suspension bridge in the world, although in the past 20 years its ranking has dropped to fourteenth.

Just a few minutes before I took this photograph at 5:14 am, the Crystal Serenity had sailed under the 64 meter high arch, its smoke stack clearing the bridge by a little over 10 meters.

Nikon D200, Nikkor 28-200 mm, monopod steadied on a handrail on the top deck of the ship.

Hello Bulent,
I love the slowly curving wake coming from your ship, the way it just gently touches the shore as you glide past looks wonderful.
Superb twilight image, with the lights on shore just beginning to take over.
Impressive location, thank you for sharing.

Bonjour, mon bon ami Bulent,
Quand le modernisme talentueux se mélange subtilement avec le patrimoine historique, cela donne un résultat très plaisant.

Une très bonne photographie.

Merhaba Sayın Hocam, sabahın ilk ışıklarında Fatih'in muhteşem eseri Rumelihisarı'nın ışıkları bile henüz sönmemişken, Tevfik Fikret'in, Orhan Veli'nin, Bülent Ecevit'in bir zamanlar şiirler yazdığı Hisar sırtları yeni bir güne merhaba derken siz bu büyülü fotoğrafı gemiden çekmişsiniz. Özellikle Boğaz'ın durgun suları üzerinde geminin yapmış olduğu kavis fotoğrafınıza ayrı bir hava katmış. O anda orada olup o havayı solumak isterdim. Elinize sağlık, saygılar, Tolga

Merhaba Bulent

A good high pov, overlooking one arched span of the suspension bridge. Good sharpness & muted colours. Tfs!

Goodmorning Dear Professor,
Before going on my way to Sile this morning, I saw your splendid dedication on TE.
As we see in your beautiful image, Istanbul is a magnificent city fascinating and vividly alive...
The paralel waves create nice graphic effects on the Bosphorus.Do the waves look like a logarithmic curve ?
I was so glad to meet you and your family, I would like to thank you for the lovely brunch again.
Have a nice weekend Bulent Bey,
Best regards,
Zeynep

A country I have always wanted to visit! You have given us a wonderful view. Very unique architecture, and perfect pov. TFS and have a happy day!

Marhaba, Bulent -

You made the best of poor lighting here. The ripples in the water are a nice counterpoint to the bridge, and the bits of light stand out well.

I'm having a bit of trouble orienting myself with this photo, though. The European shore is on the left, but if you were sailing into Istanbul from the Black Sea, it should be on the right. Maybe the ship had turned around in preparation for docking?

Best,
Dan

Hello Bulent,

And many thanks for this beautiful picture which you dedicated to all of us. I can understand the value of it not only because it is a splendid photograph but also because it represents so well the spirit of Istanbul which you must be missing so much when abroad.
It was very remunerating to know you personally, I really look forward for more meetings.

Hi Bulent--A very nice note, it really brings the place to life! Nice time, and POV, for a photo, too, with twilight just setting in and the golden lights on the fortress coming on.

But I think this photo could express all that better with some technical improvements. It has the look of a photo that was edited with a color profile. Of course when you upload, the color profile is lost, and you end up with something rather more drab than what you saw during editing. Just curious--do you always view your photos during editing as they will look on the web? (In Photoshop, one way is choose View-->Proof Setup-->Monitor RGB, I don't know if that's the best as my Photoshop skills are limited.)

Anyway, I did a WS, making it less blue and more contrasty.

Regards, Ken.

A fine afternoon shot from this well known place Bulent. The bridge looks majestetic crossing between the two continents. The bow wave of the ship makes for a fine pattern in the calm sea.

Hello Bülent,
In this dreamlike image of the 'Magical Shores' of Istanbul, you were able to maintain the details in the buildings and preserve the jewel-like glitter of the fortress lights. The half-light of the early morning sky, the skyline of Istanbul, the gentle curving spans of the bridge and soft ripples in the water are very, very beautiful. Your note is filled with interesting history. As I read it, I wondered how long the bridge is and then I found the answer in the fourth paragraph. Both the picture and the note are outstanding.
Warm wishes,
Betty

Hello Bulent,

The castle looks impressive and enigmatic from the distance.

The historic castle and the modern bridge together in the same composition make an interesting juxtaposition.
Thanks for the educational note professor Bulent.

I hope you come back soon to visit the golden panthers at FIU!

Hi Bulent, It is good to see some wonderful new places in your gallery. The note makes this especially good as always so much to learn from your comments. We in Australia/NZ have a shorter time zone in history. The 28-200 mm lens is excellent for both wide angle and for zoom. TFS. Murray.

What a problem with the site, 10 hour impossible for a visit.
I like ths misty atmosphere in this picture, through the dark moment bet we a very attractive picture, excllent in two parts, to the right the river and to the left the city.
Very well composition. TFS.

Have a nice day,

This is a spectacular picture with perfect composition and great colours for an early morning shot. The curved diagonal formed by the small waves is fantastic and a good eye catcher. Well done.

merhaba bulent

i like the curvy lead-in for this composition. from your image, one can sense that these shores are very special for you. i guess, for my own taste, i would have cropped a bit off the top: not too much 'information' in that part of the sky.

Merhaba Bulent Bey,
I think you've had a very productive and creative visit to Turkey as I see from this photo.
A very interesting and uncommon POV with soft evening colors.

Hi Bülent,

A suspended bridge with good height above the sea !!! I like the particular atmosphere which arises from the image with this light ambient nebulosity and this twilight. I find well framing balanced. Interesting photograph very as far as the note as usual. And I see that this stay was the occasion to meet TE friends. Thank you Bülent.

With all my friendships and a very good WE,

Hello Bülent,
The haze could have done much harm in other situations, but here it looks lovely and enhances the great magic (I find the word very appropriate!) of the view and light. The POV is great and the framing is very clever and gracious. I am amazed how it is so well balanced, the right part being so empty compared to the left part. I guess the elegant bridge and the curbed track on the water have much to do with that. Another interesting thing is that the horizon is inclined to the left, but that goes almost unnoticed, probably because the towers on the left look straight and we expect the suspension bridge to be naturally inclined.
Regards, José.

Merhabalar
Bülent Hocam gerçekten İstanbul Boğazı'nı ve Rumeli Hisarı'nı nefis görüntülemişsiniz, ellerinize sağlık.

Bulent, this is a nice shot but I feel not up to your usual, it is soft maybe because of the mist in the air and the color is pretty washed out. All that said it is a fine shot to show me a place I have never been and the steadiness of the shot is great, the detail is crisp. Your note is also very good as is usual. Nice presentation.

hi Bulent

I always find this link of 2 continents to be a good attraction for a photograph at different time of day and under different weather conditions too, especially the bridge and the sea.

At this dim light hour, the mood is really unusual especially seeing the vehicles running on the deck and ending at a 'dead end' of your border. I like the subtle view of castle and buildings on the slope above the coastal road.

Hello Professor 'A'
Your notes are as always, great to read. The wake on the water left by your ship creates a great lead-in. In the dusky light, the effect of the fog, the mighty bridge creates a lovely spectacle. Reminds me of the wonderful film I saw lately, Fatih Akin's 'Crossing the Bridge' - the sound of Istanbul.
