Photographer’s Note

This photo was taken during a quick night photo shoot that I did with Maciekda in Aden. Aden is probably Yemen's best place for urban street photography. It features a mixture of old colonial crumbling down buildings with excellent examples of soviet architecture, all spiced up with its share of neon lights.

I saw more women in the streets of Aden than anywhere else in the country although most of them were still covered with Niqab. It is quite interesting to watch the black cloaked women enter into colourful dress stores and go shopping for them.

Hi Daniel. A special window into the lives of these women. Good point about them buying fashionable clothing. And why not, as these women, like most women, like to look beautiful. In this case it's for their husbands and not for strangers.It does look like a busy place and the tilt adds to the mood. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello Daniel,

I am very glad that you show this image with woman in burka.
This is a totally other culture that here in us western countries.
The women are here exactly a ghost in the night, happy that we get more light in the background.
It's a very good image and very instructive for everyone.

What a lot of darkness in this photo...
Would it be a too narrow critique, if i end it with saying that, i mostly like the golden reflections on the wooden door?

Ah là part contre j'aime beaucoup celle-ci !
Cette femme sur la gauche qui se faufile comme un fantôme, les couleurs et les lumières que je trouve parfaite, même ce halo blanchatre qui provient des néons...
Et enfin ce regard comme seul signe de vie...
Aden ? Sur les traces de Rimbaud...

Hi Daniel,

Your description surely gets my imagination working. Crumbling down colonial architecture mixed with soviet buildings and a sauce of neon lights. Could be a good scene for a filmhouse movie!
Nice nice shot accompanied with a thoughtful note. Nice!

As a westerner, seeing women completely covered in black with only their eyes showing gives me a strange feeling. I think you capture that in your photo. It has sort of a creepy look to it. The lighting is nicely captured as well. I really like the golden reflection on the door.

Ah que j'aime tes photos de gens, caché(e)s comme ici ou pas ! J'ai appris récemment que c'était très difficile de prendre les femmes en photo dans ce pays, mais apparemment si elles sont bien couvertes il n'y a plus de problèmes ! J'aime beaucoup cette petite photo de rue avec des belles couleurs et pleine de vie ; la fin de la dernière phrase de la note me laisse un peu perplexe : "go shopping FOR them" : je ne pense pas que tu aies fait leurs achats pour elles !
En tous cas : très belles, toutes tes photos, compliments !

hello Daniel,
I absolutely love this photo, although I agree with others it does look a bit scary with blurred figures looking like spirits. but the reflection of golden light on the door and the bright yellow portal in the background make the scene positively energetic, I can easily imagine women laughing about their private jokes without anyone seeing it :) very nice work :)

This one I love. Theres a great mix of modern and fast paced lifestyle with the contrast of the traditional dress. Just like some of your other photos Ive commented on, the eyes are so small but make such a great impact in the shot.

hello Daniel,
top class street photography with an extra edge to it....a dystopian edge.
Light, colours, action are all there but I cannot but help having a sinking feeling whenever I see women covered in this way.
