Sadam's barber Photo

Photographer’s Note

This nice man is called Ali and he cut my hair while I was in Zabid. Notice the photos of political figures (mostly the Yemeni president in different situations) including a photo of Sadam Hussein behind him.

For some reason, Sadam is very much admired in Yemen. There are pictures, calendars and posters of him everywhere. Yemen did not condemn the invasion of Kuwait which resulted in thousands of yemeni workers being expelled from Kuwait and other rich emirates.

When I was in Florida for work a few weeks ago, I went to get my hair cut in Sarasota. The girl who cut my hair asked me where I got my last haircut, so I told her......

She said that was the second time she had ever heard of Yemen, the first time was in TV sitcom "friends" where Chandler is trying to get away from annoying girlfriend Janice, and ends up telling her he cant see her cause he is going to Yemen.

Excellent portrait! Quelle atmosphère!

Un sourire comme celui-là ne peut mentir et le contact avec ton sujet est intime et engageant. Vraiment intéressant de voir ce décor de" salon" de barbier sirupeux à la gloire de Sadam. On peut même deviner la silhouette d'un photographe au travail!... :-P)

How much did you pay? 5%,than you did in Florida?
A great shot,and wonderful portrait.I like the background too with the propaganda placards.
I`m still happy with my haicut from Ngapali beach/Myanmar for less than one $ including tip!

A wonderful portrait of a man in his working environment, and I'm quite surprised with a low level
of noise, Daniel. (or you did a real good job removing that
noise, somehow?)
Not a single part of the frame wasted, and I wish I was
there myself cause it must've been quite an experience
to have spent time at the hairdresser's so different!
Love the use of the mirror to show yourself & more of
the berber himself!

La foto es excelente y me encanta un detalle muy tonto pero muy peculiar: el reflejo en el espejo.
Tu nota es también... divertida (me encanta el comentario de la peluquera de la Florida).

La qualité, notamment au niveau de la netteté est redoutable ! Et puis il a une bonne gueule de sympathique.... J'aime ton cadrage et ton utilisation de cet arrière plan coloré...

Salut Daniel, elle est géniale cette photo, franchement géniale, il a qqch ce coiffeur, il dégage qqch, une certaine aura et un charisme certain. Une bonne bouille toute en rondeur et au delà de son visage tu as merveilleusement bien capté la scène, la légère DOF permettant de deviner ces posters en arrière plan, ces ornements et teintes, l'écriture arabe, on est plongé dans un univers, le Yemen .. Magnifique

Hi Daniel. I liked your free framing style throughout your gallery. I thought I would try it too. Your frame works on portraits are great, it looks random but still looks everythings are placed in where they are supposed to be. Very lovely portrait, this one.
