Photographer’s Note

Taken during a hike around the town of Manakha.
Such are Yemeni landscapes: mountainous, impregnable, filled with castles from another age.

Light conditions werent very easy for landscape photos due to the excessive sunlight.

Salut Daniel,

La grande diagonale traversant la photo en fait une composition dynamique et percutante. Elle découpe du même coup le paysage en deux parties, soit le premier plan aux couleurs soutenues et chaudes, alors que la seconde moitié fait place à un vaste étendu parsemé de sommets, que la brume vient atténué.

Le château se trouve à l'intersection de deux lignes de force et confirme l'efficacité et la beauté de cette scène.

Magnificent landscape and impressive Yemeni fortress-like villages. I think the composition has gained a lot from not showing any sky.

Excellent shot Daniel - I like how you compressed the perspective with the moderate telephoto, placing the fortress against the hazy mountains in the background.
The way the line of the hill leads in diagonally from the corner works very well, as does excluding the sky.

It is really good to see how you managed to separate the hill of the castle from everything else in the background. It created an excellent depth to show well the distances to the castle and the isolation in where it is located. From what I can see it is something like a village inside the fortress. Correct? Also, is there another village on top of the hill on left hand side? Well done.

C'est une tres tres belle compsotion avec les deux parties si differentes. L'une baignee de lumiere, l'autre baignee dans la brume. Un relief, une profondeur extra, et la forteresse si bien placee. Quel equilibre dans la compo! Bravo.

Voilà des paysages de l'ordre du merveilleux ! C'est en les voyant que j'ai eu la première fois envie de me rendre au Yemen... Question sécurité, tu l'as senti comment ? J'imagine que c'était tranquille, mais c'est vrai que c'est un pays qui défraye régulièrement les infos avec ses enlèvements...

C'est une superbe forteresse prise dans une belle lumière malgré les difficultés dont tu parles. Le cadrage est parfait avec beaucoup de profondeur de champ.

La verdad que tienes un portafolio muy bueno de fotos estupendas, esta es una foto impresionante tomada desde un punto de vista excelente, la profundidad, iluminacion y nitidez son puntos importantes en tu composicion asi como los contrastes de colores. Buen trabajo.

Wonderful shot of this village Daniel. I think I need to go back in the winter to this area. It was so hazy when I was there in the summer that a shot like this just wasn't possible. I think you managed very well, and the light with the long shadows casts a good view of this village.

You have some great shots of Yemen. What was your overall impression, after you had some initial concerns I recall?

A very impressive shot of this wild and rugged landscape. You handled the light very well, Daniel, and the composition is absolutely perfect. Excluding the sky (which was probably blown out if it was that bright) has enhanced the depth of this shot. Cheers . . . David
