Photographer’s Note
“Noon Day Gun” Is the name of this photo taken today a Signal Hill a National Historic Site of Canada which celebrated their 50th anniversary. Part of this celebration was firing the noon day gun, situated near Cabot Tower, and is fired daily at 12 noon in keeping with the summit's history and a tradition that dates back to the 1830s.
In fact, many years ago when my father was with Parks Canada, He regularly fired the noon day gun at 12:00.
Whenever you were in St. John’s, you would look at your timepiece to see if your watch was correct. It was a great tradition.
The church complained that the gun interrupted their sermons on Sunday and was temporarily silenced. However due to a massive outcry it was quickly reinstated. During the summer, we will hear the noon day gun sound again.

Great image, Jim. The uniforms are sharp and colorful. The smoke from the cannon suggests action that just occurred. I like the natural background. Well done.
