Ottawa's old and new, a photo from Ontario, Centre

Photographer's Note

The photo shows a display of Ottawa's mix of neo gothic and modern architecture.

On December 31, 1857, Queen Victoria was asked to choose a common capital for the Province of Canada and chose Ottawa. The Queen's advisers suggested she pick Ottawa for several reasons: Ottawa's position in the back country made it more defensible, while still allowing easy transportation over the Ottawa River. Ottawa was at a point nearly exactly midway between Toronto and Quebec City (500 kilometres) and that the smaller size of the town made it less likely that politically motivated mobs could go on a rampage and destroy government buildings, as had happened in the previous Canadian capitals.

Several of Ottawa's governmental buildings date from the beginning of the 20th century after fires had destroyed previous constructions. Most of them are a display of gothic revival architecture.

Bien composé avec cette association de neuf avec le coin du centre national des arts et l'ancien avec l'hôtel sur le canal Rideau (si j'ai bonne mémoire!)
Pour moi nostalgie car j'ai passé là 2 années à quelques blocs à peine
Cà n'a pas l'air d'avoir trop changé dans le centre

i used to live in ottawa for 4 years, so i know this area well.
you show a creative and unique peek into the city centre.
love all the glass,, the reflections, and even the clouds in the glass aswell.
lovely and peaceful, with warm lighting.

Cette photo m'a tout de suite attirée car j'en ai une semblable ou presque dans mes archives. La mienne date de 2004 et je l'ai prise à mes débuts en format numérique. J'aime beaucoup celle-ci, qui a bénéficié d'une belle luminosité. Le parc à l'avant est très sympatique et la composition dans son ensemble me plaît beaucoup.

J'apprécie beaucoup ces mélanges d'architecture anciennes et modernes qui se mixent dans ces reflets. Une bonne composition qui m'aurait aussi bien plu avec un cadrage plus serré évitant le triangle de ciel.

Je zou denken dat de zitbanken er geplaatst werden om vandaar naar het reuzegrote scherm te kijken. Goede compositie, prachtige architectuurfoto en de aanwezigheid van de boompjes is toch een extra interessant element op deze mooie foto.

A lovely reflection of the green roofed building in the newer glass facade of the highrise. Good sharpness & realistic colour. Th people add scale & context. Love the repetition of the squares & their trees or shrubs. Tfs!

J'ai fait une photo qui ressemble beaucoup à celle-ci, sous un angle quelque peu différent. J'aime beaucoup ce mélange de neuf et de vieux qui reflète fidèlement l'architecture de nos villes.

Hi Paul,
a very effective framing in this capture, to mix the Neo gothic architecture of the old governmental buildings with the contemporary building, by means of a few magnificent reflections on its glass front.
The light and the colors are very good, and you have controlled skillfully the exposure.
It is a beautiful composition.

Ottawa à bien changé depuis que j'y ai habité au début des années 60. Merci pour le souvenir.
