Photographer's Note

Though it doesn't gain media attention like hockey, soccer or baseball, mountain biking is a passion for many Canadians. Canada has developed some of the best professional racers mountain bike racers in the world, in large part due to an abundance of excellent terrain for riding.

This photo, taken at the 2004 Canadian National Mountain Bike Championships in Beaupre (Mont Saint Anne) Quebec shows a racer taking a fast left turn near the top of the course. Moments after riding through this relatively easy corner, riders were thrown into the woods, where the trail was wet, muddy and very rocky.

Though there are some distracting elements in the photo, namely the poles marking the edge of the course, I feel that this shot conveys a sense of the speed. Also, the low perspective, looking through the grass adds a sense of mystery, and maybe even a feeling of voyeurism ... looking on from the sidelines as the athlete does their thing.
