Photographer's Note

Waiting on a bus stop in winter at Montreal can be tricky once buses do not pass that often we’re a bound to freeze our asses. One better knows the schedules and avoid waiting on the streets, but I as a newcomer didn’t know that! After some incidents I started asking myself if there wansn't anywhere a 'winter's survival course' for newcomers in Canada... I had the impression that I even didn't know how to walk anymore! Before I get my winter boots I sliped many tiems and as it was expected I finished by falling one day in the middle of the street and geting my buts wet and cold with snow! My husband's first experience in cleaning the car after a snowfall was a sucessive clumsy event. First we didn't have the proper 'equipment' to do the 'job', so he let the car turned on to warm while went on looking for a nice soul to lend him a shovel. Whem he was back he noticed that he had locked the keys inside the car. He called the rental company and they said they would send somebody with a spare key to open it. While waiting he decided to start cleaning the snow around the car, which was about 50 cm high. Half an hour after he got the job done, people had caome to open the car and he was about to leave when the snowmachine passed cleaning the street and pushing all the snow to the side thus blocking the car again! ....I’m pretty convinced that the locals can easily spot the new immigrants in their neighborhood only looking at certain details: the insecure way we walk on the snowy pavements, the clumsy way we deal with the cleaning the car business or by the waiting alone at the bus stop for not knowing their schedules...those among other little things... Experience winter is a whole lot of things, our first one was full of funny clumsy events, nice magical moments, some depresion and loniless and for sure a lot of cold! 2004 was a tough winter with a sequence of days when the temperatures were around -40C. Not bad for a first winter experience!
I intend to be showing on the next week and so some of the photographs taken on our winter 'experiences' in Montreal and region, a kind of homage to the city and country that has so generously welcomed us, a place we live and love.
