Photographer’s Note

Shooting at blue hour usually offers outstanding results, when there's some artificial lighting on structures and buildings around to balance the natural glow from the sky.

But in this case, I had to opt for an early version of the blue hour, as the pines and the river would have been too dark, if I had pick one of the frames shot later.

The title make reference to an article I have read about blue and green that doesn't have distinction in some languages.

Appelblauwzeegroen correspond to a very specific colour in Dutch, close to turquoise, a mix between green and blue that could be translated to the conjuncture 'apple-blue-sea-green'.

A fine capture of the landmark building in Banff. Wonderful dark colours in the late evening light and the movement of the water rendered in a spectacular way. Light so well managed. A pleasure to look at.

Bonjour André,

Quel titre! Apres 5 ans de cours d allemand, j ai encore pas mal de difficulté avec cette langue (mais ca reste quand meme bien plus abordable que l islandais).
Ta note decrit tres bien la demarche et le resultat est presque surealiste avec un tel eclairage. Je pense que ca vient essentiellement du rendu de la riviere. J ai l impression de basculer dans la Twilight Zone (ou 'la 4eme dimension' comme cette serie s appelait en France).

It's difficult to categorise this as 'blue hour', (hence your title I suppose) as on first look is seems like full daylight. It's only the evidence of a slow shutter and the lights on the hotel that give the game away. AND speaking of slow shutter, the effect on the rushing turquoise water is magical. I can't remember having seen an image of this place from this POV before; you were industrious in seeking this out. The opposing foreground and background diagonals are a very strong and successful feature of the composition, while the chateau-like hotel nestles comfortably amongst the pines. Excellent work.
Have a safe trip. I know it will be an enjoyable one!

this is a beautiful shot, I usually visit this place a lot and each time is amazing. you captured one of the best POV with perfect light and an amazing effect on the water. even the sparkle of light around the hotel can be seen like golden stars

Hello Andre,
You know what this water reminds me of is in one of those Japanese paintings where we can see the individual waves painted, I like this element the most in the shot, but the hotel with its twinkling lights is well captured too from a good angle, you definately found the right view point. And the bit of blue sky balances out nicely with the blue of the water.
You will have to pronounce this title for me when I see you ;o)

Bonjour Andre ,
Cette photo est assez étonnante . Le lieu d'abord , extraordinaire , avec cet énorme hotel illuminé au milieu de cette nature sauvage . La lumière si bien captée , à cette heure de la journée , ce qui crée une superbe ambiance . Et puis l'image est vraiment bien composée dans ce format vertical . Une seule chose qui me plait moins , c'est l'effet de la pause longue sur la rivière . Mais çà doit être une affaire de goût .

Une prise de vue saisie au bon moment. Tu as bien fait d'adopter une heure matinale pour cette photographie.
La lumière est uniforme sur l'ensemble de la scène à part peut-être le haut de l'image qui semble avoir été filtré de très habile manière. Un très bon travail qui met parfaitement en évidence cet hôtel perdu dans la forêt !
Quel cadre magnifique pour se reposer !!

L'effet sur l'eau est particulièrement spectaculaire et donne un aspect irréaliste à l'image (bien aidé en cela par cet hôtel à l'architecture si particulière)
Bon séjour à Johannesburg (je n'en doute pas un instant en admirant le WS o)

La première fois j'ai vu une image de cet hôtel était il y a très très longtemps lorsqu'un de mes oncles a dû y aller pour le travail... Je trouvais déjà le cadre magnifique.
Ici c'est super, surtout l'effet de l'eau si semble ajouté avec une brosse. La nettété du reste est tiptop.

Only Canadians (Americans) to plant a building in the middle of a National Park. I guess they don't know the meaning of "protected area"... ;) At least, the hotel looks very nice in the middle of all that beauty.

amazing place, and your photo on this "apple-blue-sea-green" hour is amazing. Full of details and with perfect composition.
The japanese also confuse green and blue, they call teh green light of trafficlight "ao" (blue).

Bonjour André,
Magnifique cette eau! L'effet de la pause lui donne un effet tellement irréel, encore renforcé par sa couleur particulière.
Je suis fan de l'heure bleue, mais pour la couleur de l'eau, je trouve qu'ici tu as bien fait de ne pas attendre davantage.
On en oublierait presque le magnifique château en arrière-plan!

salut grand malade,
je suis tombé sur le cul quand j'ai vu cette photo pour la première fois. C'est vraiment très fort. T'as été tenté de laissé ta caméra (de m... :P ) sur le trépied et d'attendre une 15aine de minutes pour que le ciel devienne plus foné un peu et d'ensuite combiner les expositions? Je sais que c'est "illégal", mais je me demande ce que ça aurait donné.
J'aime vraiment beaucoup les lumières allumées, mais j'aime surtout la rivière en mouvement! 22 seondes? damn, la lumière a le temps de changer en 22 secondes à cette heure-là!!

Il y a un pont pour traverser la rivière ou t'as juste nagé (après avoir lancé ta caméra de l'autre côté))?

C'est vraiment très beau malgré l'appareil.
