New Day, a photo from Ontario, Centre

Photographer's Note

Photo taken early in the morning as the sun started shining through the mist. There was a forest on the left that created a natural shade just infront of the tiny island, thus the cold blue in the foreground and warm golden colour in the background. Very little editing done to this image except for slight colour correction and saturation. The island is part of Thousand Islands on St. Lawrence River. Day before I was trying to photograph Heart Island but the weather and light were miserable, I would kill to have such wonderfull rising mist while photographing Heart Island and the castle, instead I had to be satisfied with the fog surrounding this Robinson Crusoe type of island.

Wow! This is an amazing shot! I love the superimposed cool and warm colours with the fog to soften everything. The island is so tiny it looks like a mirage in the middle of the fog! Quite incredible that it is actually inhabited.

Fantastic shot. I think anyone who has ever been fishing will appreciate this time of morning and this scene. You captured a really neat moment, and the water is a beautiful color...the fog is perfect around the houses, and I wish I were inside sleeping.

One thing to think about though. I normally put no stock in the rule of thirds, because I find it to be just as wrong as it is right most of the time, and the center of the frame is a powerful place to put a subject. However, in this case, I do wish the houses were framed to the right of the photograph, because I think a lot would be gained by a more visual expression of the island's nature. The fog provides a barrier I find too abrupt here, and its slight break on the left might have been used to highlight a visual cue to the front field - the water - stretching back and being an element of a back field, too. I think that kind of continuity might make for a very strong photograph.

Beautiful photo, it looks very serene. the light and the colours are fantastic. The mist adds a mystic appearence to the picture. I like the soft reflections on the water. Well captured Peter!

A wonderful misty effect. The island almost appears to be floating on the lake. I wish I could get up early enough to take pics like this :-)

Nice atmosphere you catched here.
Keeping the water gives you a nice reflection, but maybe cropping it would add some mistery to the picture, only with the mist?

This is a spectacular shot. The exposure is very well managed to capture this mystical scenery. It resembles a house in a steam bath... The soft orange light shades nicely illuminated the mist.

Hi Peter, it's a very nice misty photo, I like the contrast between the water with cold tones and the warmer misty area, the reflection too is very nice, maybe you could crop away one or two cms at the bottom to accentuate the landscape character.

I love the misty, magical quality of this photo. The glow of the mist is nicely contrasted with the dark reflection in the water.
