Photographer’s Note

An imposing deer is standing in front of Mt. Stephen in Yoho Park.

I don't know much about the difference between an elk, a caribou, a moose and a deer, but according to my research, this is an adult male deer.

This animal appears on our quarter - Canadian 25¢

Bonjour André,

Superbe photo de studio avec une eclairage bien maitrisé. L animal empaillé est tres realiste :-)

Treve de plaisanteries, ce n est que de la jalousie.
L eclairage est vraiment incroyable et tu l as parfaitement exploitée avec un plus un point de vue proche de l animal et en contre plongée pour bien utiliser l arriere plan montagneux.
J aime bien dans le haut de la photo le placement de l arbre dans un coin et de la montagne dans l autre. C est tres equilibré.

la première chose que j'ai fait,c'est de regarder avec quel super téléobjectif tu avais fait cette photo!Mais non,c'est un 200 mm,tu étais donc tout près de l'animal,à moins que tu aies pu faire un bon recadrage,et dans ce cas,la qualité est restée top!Trop belle la photo!La pose du cerf,le majestueux arrière-plan,les couleurs,la finesse des détails dans le petit triangle d'herbes aux pieds du cerf,tout est magnifique!

Un animal imposant dans ce décor sauvage !
On pourrait croire à un animal empaillée tellement il est parfait dans sa posture. J'aime bien la lumière que tu as capté en arrière plan sur cette paroi rocheuse.

Andre, I haven't a clue as to how you got this shot without spooking the Elk but it is a very impressive capture indeed. The detail is awesome and the velvet coating is clearly visible on his antlers, this is really grea stuff.

Hello Deer Andre ;o)
He almost looks fake, like one of those stuffed animals. He is standing in a great stance with his head and beautiful antlers turned towards the side, and looking so majestic against the backdrop of the mountain, and with your low point of view it adds to this grand feeling. I like the dandelions in the green strip at his feet and the light seemed perfect so you got no harsh shadows. You seemed to have much better luck with the weather and the animals after I left you.

Hi, Andre -

An excellent wildlife shot; you managed to compose it beautifully - the tree and the mountain are completely in the frame, as is the fg grass, and the deer's eye is on the center line as is proper for a portrait - and get great light management, all in what must have been no more than a few seconds' window. Animals, even in national parks, do not normally have the patience to pose for photographers.

First of all, this is actually an Elk, and most interestingly, the antlers in velvet with early season growth. This is a gorgous image - perfect vertical composition with the elk presenting his very best pose. I love it - wish I could give more points for this one. Gerald

Non mais regardez-moi ce beau montage...
Oui montage Mr André... et ce pour plusieurs raisons...
j'argumente :

1/ au premier plan des fleurs de pissenlits et là mon ptit gars, je défie quiconque de les laisser intactes et de passer outre l'envie de souffler dessus pour voir s'envoler les petits bouts de fleurs...

2/ Des chûtes d'eau qui se prennent pour des troncs de sapin, là faut pas pousser mémé dans les orties... le camouflage est vraiment mauvais...

3/ de la neige au sommet des montagnes canadiennes...
Et puis quoi encore...

4/ alors là, la cerise sur le gâteau... ta peluche de quand tu étais petit, oui, celle-là même qui trône sur ton jeté de lit en poils synthétiques de castor...
tu ne croyais tout de même pas qu'on allait avaler la couleuvre et imaginer qu'au détour d'un chemin, tu es tombé nez à nez avec Mr Cerf?

En plus pour les bois, on voit bien que ce sont des dents de dinosaures... pfffffff

Et à quel moment tu chantes la chanson...
"Cerf, cerf ouvre-moi, ou le chasseur me tuera... "

Hi Andre, that is a remarkable image. You caught him in great pose and inclusion of the BG elements is fabulous. How did you do this? I can't imagine that this beast would just stand still and obligingly pose whilst you knelt in front of it??? cheers, steve

I think it's actually an elk, but....how on earth did you get a shot like this? One of the best wildlife shots I've seen. To capture the combination of that pose and the light on Mt. Stephen--dang, I'm jealous!

What all did you see in Yoho? I think Yoho may be my favorite of the Canadian mountain parks.

Quelle chance de voir cette bête de si près et qu'il soit si net ! Moi aussi je confond tout. Je sais pas si c'est ça qu'on a vu (de loin) ou autre chose. Avec un nez rouge, il pourrait travailler pour Père Noël. J'aime le détail des 3 dents de lion au premier plan que l'animal semble ignorer.
