Photographer's Note

The Niagara Falls captured from a helicopter. Wow, what an impression hearing the roaring sound of the falls and looking down only through a little piece of glass. Scanned from a negative captured by a Canon A1.

The Niagara Falls area has seen continuous settlement since the 17th century, first by the Iroquois and then by Europeans who were drawn to the immense falls. Louis Hennepin, a French priest, is regarded as the first European to visit the area in the 1670s.

Tourism started in the early 19th century and has been a vital part of the local economy since that time. As well as the obvious attractions of the falls, Niagara Falls markets itself as a honeymoon destination and is self-proclaimed as the honeymoon capital of the world.

With the creation of a Niagara regional government in 1970, the city amalgamated with the village of Chippawa and surrounding Willoughby, Crowland, and Stamford Townships, creating the present-day municipal boundaries.(Wikipedia)

I am filled with envy, as when we were here we planned to do the helicopter flight and ran out of time after going on the Maid of the Mist. This bird's eye view is fantastic and gives us a great impression of the bends in the river as well as both falls.

Hallo Achim,
eindrucksvoller Blick hinunter auf die Niagara Wasserfälle. Die Vogelperspektive ermöglicht einen sehr guten Gesamteindruck der Wasserfälle und die Bildqualität ist für einen Scan auch sehr gut. Mit was scannst du denn deine Dias? Da hätte ich nämlich auch noch einige, die dringend digitalisiert werden sollten.

I must have seen thousands of pictures of the Niagara, but never as amazing as this. This is a totally new POV I'm seeing this picture, from high above & I also can seem to hear the thunderous roar coming from the falls below. Amazing!

ach, das ist wirklich wunderbar! Am schönsten ist, dass (im Gegensatz zu vielen Luftaufnahmen) die Landschaft hier nicht als eine Landkarte erscheint, sondern mit spürbaren Tiefen. Dein Erlebnis kann ich natürlich nicht haben, ich kann aber schon ahnen, was Du dort erlebt hast - und das ist eigentlich das Ziel von TE.

Definitely on the list of the Top Ten Most Photographed sites, but the airborne point of view is not that common!
Well framed with excellent sharpness, lots of interesting details to explore...
You found a fine angle here, and did a nice job in post processing!

wow, you were quite lucky to be able to get in a helicopter above those falls :)
Quite the impressive POV you have on the horse shoe there, it seems as gery as it was when I was last there: http://www.trekearth.com/viewphotos.php?l=5&p=898402
Although your picture predates widespread digital photography, it is a good example of what could be well-done in those days, a great composition.
