“Irish Hurling in Bay Bulls” is the name of this photo of taking today in scenic Bay Bulls as part of the Irish Loop celebration. This was a historic moment as a group of Newfoundland and Labradoreans played together with a group from Ireland. As you can see, it was a coed a match purely for fun.
In 1845, the civic fathers of Quebec City banned the playing of hurling in their narrow streets, while in St. John's, Newfoundland, hurling was being played as early as 1788 at the "Barrens" of the city. The ladies' version of hurling, Camogie, has had its presence on occasion in some Canadian communities.
As one historian mentioned today, this is a historic moment as organized Irish Hurling was play again in Newfoundland and Labrador.
