Vancouver from Cypress, a photo from British Columbia, Western

Photographer's Note

As the title says, this photo was taken from Cypress Mountain, and the view is of the Downtown Vancouver area.

The bridge in the middle is the Lions Gate, a bridge i've photographed a few times here on TE, and i'll post a WS photo of it too so jog your memories.

Another subject you may remember that i've posted many times are the Canada Pavillion/Imax, also referred to as the Colored Sails. I will post a photo of those two in the WS. If you look real close, you can see the colored sails in the middle of the photo, just above the suspension cables of the bridge...do you see them? There are hints of blue, yellow, red and white.

To get this shot, I had to wake up at 3:30 in the morning, drive into downtown, and hope for the best.

hi craig,
what a stunning view of the mountain over the city. it is such an impressive sight, and your picture captures that perfectly. the colours in the water constrast with the wonderful illumination from the city lights that strectch out as far as the eye can see. and the whole scene is secured by the wonderful bridge which spans the frame as well as the river.

Hello Craig,
WOW ! Cypress Mountain certainly is a great viewpoint to admire the city of Vancouver!
How is it possible that I've never seen this fantastic panorama before?
Seen from this mountain and with that beautiful bridge Vancouver surely looks as wonderful as San Francisco and Sydney, two metropolises of which we often get to see panoramic views including their bridge.
Excellent light management, splendid colours, superb night shot.

this is a captivating view of the city, a sea of lights and the water surface so beautiful and still capturing as many lights as it can and reproducing them in lovely luminous reflections. I love the clarity, the vibrant blue atmosphere and the reflection of the lights of the bridge. Although extremely spectacular, this view is also surprisingly tranquil. The colours are rendered marvellously. Congratulations and thank you!

Hi Craig,
what is it about bridges that makes looking at them so captivating though many of them look alike? I definitely see the Bosphorus bridge in this one because the memory's still fresh:))
But for me the most stunning part of this shot is the background - just like a universe of myriads of stars. I guess it can beat any Hubble shot.:))
And I admire your passion for photography. 3.30 a.m. up and go? That's the character! Something I'll never possess. That's why you don't see me posting that often:))

fantastic night shot where the lights of the town don't appear like windows lights, but like a cloud of luminous points above the town.This is really impressive.I also love the colors, particularly the blue-purple river, and the colorful reflections inside.Magnificent!

Have you ever seen Blackpool Illuminations? Well, this reminds me of that event but on a grand scale! Not only have you achieved a fantastic mosaic of lights but, also, the composition works very well, with the water defining the thirds and the bridge taking the opposing diagonal across the frame.

So beautiful night view of Vancouver! Exposure here is simply excellent. Nice colour of the water. Accent pleasantly put on the beautiful bridge. I wonder what for that vertical blue line on the side of a building; based on the way it impacts your excellent photo, that doesn't seem a so great idea.

Boy, oh, boy! This is brilliant!

Of course I can see the sails in the distance - I can see everything in this stunningly sharp and detailed picture. And what amazes me more is that you've taken this with a long lens - 135mm - we're not really used to seeing night shots like this taken with a telephoto but it's worked out perfectly. And, of course, why shouldn't it?

The exposure, colours, composition and sharpness are all second to none. A fabulous photograph. Now my usual question, er, I don't think that this was HDR, was it?

I think I saw this on FB and wondered why you hadn't uploaded it. It's stunning in every detail. The framing, the exposition, the colours and the light are all exquisite. Your eye for detail is always present in your photos, but in this one, it's there more than ever.

A nice night shot with all those colors. Your point of view was perfect to have the bridge against the river and so to provide a good view on this main element.

the problem with facebook is that sometimes I forget to comment on a photo here if I saw it there first.

This is a breath taking view and I am actually surprised that you did not think about it before. The POV is excellent and obviously very well thought through, the timing perfect as well.
I like the changing surface of the reflection.
