Photographer's Note
Pole Flying is an ancient Mesoamerican ceremony. The ceremony involves five 'flyers'. Firstly they all climb a 30 metre pole and then wind four ropes around the pole. Next four of them attach a rope to each of their waists from which, they launch themselves and by unwinding they gradually descend to the ground. The fifth remains on top of the pole, dancing and playing a flute and drum. According to one myth, the ritual was created to ask the gods to end a severe drought. The ceremony has been named an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in order to help the ritual survive and thrive in the modern world.

Bonjour Marlene,

Hello,
This ritual has its origin in Papantla, 1400 kilometers north of Playa del Carmen and corresponds to the Totonac culture. The name of these groups is Voladores de Papantla - Flyers of Papantla

Hi Marlene,
That's fascinating. That pole is huge and such show no doubt requires lots of practice. Very nice looking square too with palms and white buildin background. Of course a still photo is not the best way to show this action.

Ciao Marlene
Romano
