The city was founded in 1563 by the captain Francisco de Ibarra, with 20 Spanish families and 80 slaves. Later the Franciscan friars arrived with native people from other regions. Named after Durango, a Basque town in northwest Spain.
Its current population is about 500000 and is located at 1880 meters above sea level.
