Salt Farms in Khanh-Hoa

I took this photo at Hòn Khói salt-farms on National Highway 1 half-way between Nha Trang and Vạn Giả Pass, which is some 30 km North of Nha Trang City where local harvesting salt is the largest salt industry of Khánh Hòa Province. Normally, a liter of salt water collected from this area after evaporation could end up with 35 grams of salt.

Since several centuries ago, salt has been an important and primary role in national revenue. According to Viet Nam History by Trần Trọng Kim, in 1721, King Trịnh Cương created a new department named Giám Dương to collect 20% tax on salt. Buyers must have registered card issued by Giám Dương to be legal for salt purchase. They also have to buy from government officials first prior to dealing with regular producers. Such a tax system triggered high price of salt and effected normal people. In 1732, the king aborted salt system to save his throne from rebels. 14 years later, Trịnh Doanh re-established a method of salt taxing: organizing every 50 acres of salt field into a kitchen (unit); each kitchen must turn in 40 drawers of salt, an equivalence of 180 dongs.

Nowadays, salt still takes its role in Vietnam economy to an extend that we are using satellite photos to help improving salt harvesting. Vietnam has a project of nearly VND134 billion (US$8.4 million) to be invested in industrial salt production to meet domestic demand. The salt industry will invest mainly in developing industrial salt fields in the central provinces of Khánh Hòa, Ninh Thuận and Bình Thuận. Vietnam expects to have about 6,600 hectares of industrial salt fields in its central and southeastern coastal provinces by end of 2005 to ensure a balance in the supply of industrial and cooking salt.

Vietnam produces 300,000 tons of industrial salt annually. Of this amount, less than 200,000 tons are qualified for use in industrial production. As a result, the country still has to import about 150,000 tons of salt for industrial production each year. These imports have brought salt prices down in the domestic market.

Absolutely fantastic capture, Nhiem!
If I had to imagine the BG for this scene I wouldn't come up with this cloud formation even in my best imaginative moments.
Also, the distribution of light and colours is great here.

Yeah...this shot rocks. Really cool. The clouds are a wonderful backdrop to this scene and the way you've managed to capture the salt workers in action is excellent as well. My only gripe is about a bit of hat just sticking out over the salt hill...would be better without it, but this is a minor thing. Excellent work.

Ecellent PoV for this, my first thought was that it would be better to see the salt harvesters in more detail, but on reflection I agree with your decisions here. The dramatic clouds make a good backdrop.

What is THIS?? The most magnificent picture I have seen from Vietnam, by far yet. Those clouds against the salt, and the cultural aspect, the informative note. It would be a shame on TE if this didn't get 100 points by tomorrow. (that said I'm out of green so will revisit later)

Nhiem,

This is a magical shot in so many respects. The action of the salt being poured, the anonymous nature of the two workers, the mostly primary colors of their clothes, and the sheer wonder of realizing that I'm looking at salt and not snow. The clouds, of course, are stupendous. I'd buy a calendar with this shot in it in a heartbeat.

Learning about the importance of salt in Vietnam (great note, btw) was a bonus.

Wow, what an absolutely brilliant photograph AND place! I've been to Vietnam in January this year, was in Nha Trang for a few days but never heard of this place.
If you look quickly you think it's all snow, and that you're in the Himalaya, or something. Then it turns out to be salt. Amazing! Also the combination of the impressive clouds, and the colours of the workers' clothing...
One of my favourites.

This is a great great job! Unfortunatly there are no smileys to give 4 points directly for what I consider as a perfect shot! Very good light and excellent composition. It's one of the most amazing skies/clouds I've ever seen in my life. Looks dynamic too thanks to the inclusion of those two people working. Very interesting note as well. By the way, I don't agree with what you say in your "intro" :-), you're a really good photographer IMO and with pictures like yours I'm sure you'll be able to feed your family.

Good lightning in the foreground and marvelous clouds in the sky! I'm a bit split with the hats covering the faces. I feel a bit like they are trying to hide and a bit like they are protecting the secret of making salt.

I'm in shock.I didn't know that there are salt farms.
I really like the shot you took it is perfect.The light, colours and people .I thought there is snow .

Hi Nhiem,

It is not easy to describe the beauty of this image.
Every single detail makes it unique and precious.

I love the salt that falls down which gives a dynamic feeling. The Backdrop is quite dramatic thanks to this imposing clouds.

I also do love the fact that we can't see the faces of this 2 workers. In this case they are part of the landscape too and not the main characters.
And the light...what a light!

This is a beautiful photo - a real work of art.

As a newby to TE this is the first piece I have added to my favourites, but I am going to have to lower my standards slightly in future to get anything else in to my favourites.

Hi Nhiem,

Lovely illusion in salt. Looking at the thumbnail view I had felt this was a photo of some snowy peak and two people have climbed to the summit. :)
Once I clicked the thumbnail, complete different photo. Loved the framing of the photo and colors and the clarity of the elements are amazing.
This goes straight to my favorites list.

Incredible shot! Colours of background are fantastic and so the contrast with the human figures. Also the movement of the two persons is given back in opposition to a landscape which seems unmoving. It's very rare to see such a photograph.
