Photographer's Note

LIER is a small city not far from Antwerp. With lots of waterways and medieval architecture it is sometimes called "little Bruges".

---

The Spui or Grote Spui, the former lockhouse (or "sluice") on the Binnennete river, is the only remaining building of the second city wall of Lier. The remains of the old fortified wall around the city are commonly called "de oude vest" (the old vestiges) and are quite popular for walks and jogging.

After excavating a connection between the Grote and the Kleine Nete rivers in 1426, Antoon Keldermans built the Groot Spui in 1508-1516. There were two locks, the Groot and the Klein Spui. Now only the Groot Spui remains.

The building, which is like a covered bridge, had a dual function:

- strengthening the city, part of the fortified wall

- protection of the mechanics which controlled the water level in the city
