Photographer's Note

To celebrate my 100th picture from Vietnam, I'll post this one for you. Here are some thoughts...

---

VIETNAM is a country that is very special to me, because I lived and worked there for a couple of years, now already 20 years ago. Time flies. But I'm still in touch with some of the wonderful people I met there and it was just wonderful to meet some of them again when we visited the country again this summer. Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans, but it sure makes great stuff to talk about.

Oh, the stories we tell...

Vietnam is the fourth country to reach the 100 mark in my gallery, after China (probably our favourite country for travelling), Belgium (my home country) and France (our big neighbour to the south).

---

THIS PICTURE is another portrait shot at Lung Phin market in Ha Giang province in the far north of the country. It's part of a little series I'm doing here.

---

LUNG PHIN is a one horse town, basically a road with some houses next to it, but it comes alive on market days when many of the so-called minority people who live in the area descend to town to buy, sell and socialize.

There are many similar places in northern Vietnam, so, please, tourists, don't all go to Lung Phin! There are many other places like this. It just happened to be where I was.

---

THIS BOY was helping out with his family on the market. He is wearing the typical black hmong ("montagnard") jacket over a T-shirt with the Vietnamese flag. The T-shirt was a present from the government to reward 'minority' children who regularly go to school. The jacket proudly belongs to his family and tradition.
