This is a capture from famous Rethymno,Crete.

ENG:Rethymno is a city of approximately 40,000 people in Greece, the capital of Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete. It was built in antiquity, but was never a competitive Minoan centre. It was, however, strong enough to mint its own coins and maintain urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town with two dolphins in a circle.Rethymno itself began a period of growth when the Venetian conquerors of the island decided to put an intermediate commercial station between Heraklion and Chania, acquiring its own bishop and nobility in the process. Today's old town is almost entirely built by the Venetians. It is one of the best preserved old towns in Crete.The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, the small Venetian harbour and narrow streets. The Venetian Loggia houses the information office of the Ministry of Culture. A Wine Festival is held there annually at the beginning of July. Another festival, in memory of the destruction of the Arkadi Monastery, is held on 7–8 November.The city's Venetian-era citadel, the Fortezza, is one of the best-preserved castles in Crete. Other monuments include the Neratze mosque, the Great Gate, the Piazza Rimondi and the Venetian Loggia.

GR:ο Ρέθυμνο είναι η πρωτεύουσα του ομώνυμου νομού της Κρήτης και η έδρα του μητροπολιτικού ομώνυμου Δήμου της περιφέρειας Κρήτης . Από το 1999 έως το 2010 σύμφωνα με την τότε διοικητική διαίρεση της Ελλάδας ήταν έδρα του τότε Δήμου Ρεθύμνης. Εμφανίζει μεγάλη τουριστική κίνηση κατά τη διάρκεια του καλοκαιριού, ενώ οι 2.500 και πλέον ενεργοί φοιτητές καθιστούν την πόλη ιδιαίτερα ζωντανή κατά την υπόλοιπη περίοδο του χρόνου. Ο πληθυσμός της πόλης ανέρχεται στους 28.987 κατοίκους . Είναι η τρίτη σε πληθυσμό πόλη της Κρήτης μετά το Ηράκλειο και τα Χανιά.Η σημερινή πόλη είναι κτισμένη στην ίδια θέση με την αρχαία Ρίθυμνα ή Ρήθυμνα ή Ριθυμνία. Μαρτυρίες για την ύπαρξη της πόλης αρχίζουν από τον 5ο-4ο αι. π.Χ. και είναι κυρίως τα αργυρά και χάλκινα νομίσματα, τα οποία έφεραν από τη μια όψη την κεφαλή του Απόλλωνα ή της Αθηνάς και από την άλλη τρίαινα ή δύο δελφίνια ή αίγα. Από την κοπή αυτών των νομισμάτων διαφαίνεται ότι ήταν ανεπτυγμένη πόλη με αξιόλογο εμπόριο. Ίσως και να είχε αναπτύξει σχέσεις με τους Πτολεμαίους οι οποίοι την είχαν μετονομάσει σε Αρσινόη. Οι πληροφορίες κατά την βυζαντινή περίοδο κρίνονται πενιχρές. Άλλες αξιόλογες μαρτυρίες δεν υπάρχουν μέχρι το 1204, οπότε οι Ενετοί αγοράζουν από τους Φράγκους κατακτητές του Βυζαντίου ολόκληρη την Κρήτη έναντι 10.000 αργυρών μάρκων, όπου και αρχίζει η Ενετοκρατία που φθάνει χρονικά μέχρι το 1669. Οι Ενετοί αρχικά εκδιώκουν τους Γενουάτες του Ενρίκο Πεσκατόρε και εγκαθίστανται στο νησί, το οποίο, όμως, παραμελούν, δίνοντας μεγαλύτερη σημασία στις κτήσεις τους της ηπειρωτικής Ελλάδας και των Επτανήσων.

a fabulous night shot on the beach, one of the most lovely in Crete, I was there for 2 hours only, on a trip made to the wonderful island in 2005.
A marvelous reflection of light in many colors on smooth sea surface.

Hello Chris,

The distance in the water creates deepness toward the illuminated city. The reflections in the water are very nicve to see. Excellent night shot with lot's of colors.

Good Morning Chris,

I remember this well.
We spent a whole day here, investigating the fort, when we should have been at Knossos but there was a strike on, so it was closed, for the first time ever!
You have used thirds composition well, the middle third being the most attractive, colourful lights and their reflections. The tiny, less colourful lights, in the distance, do create a good sense of depth.
This is a lovely place, great food and well worth a visit.

Χρίστο γεια σου,
όμορφη βραδυνή σκηνή από το Ρέθυμνο,με την φώτα να έχουν αποδοθεί πολύ καλά.Οι αντανακλάσεις συμπληρώνουν ευχάριστα το όμορφο σκηνικό και δίνουν μιά αίσθηση γαλήνης και ξεγνιασιάς.
Εγώ θα έκοβα ένα ίσο κομμάτι πάνω και κάτω από την φωτισμένη επιφένεια, μιας και είναι τόσο σκοτεινό που δεν δίνει καμμία πληροφορία σ' αυτόν που βλέπει την φωτογραφία.Δες το WS να δεις τι εννοώ.

I am sure you must be happy with this result as much as I do my friend. The beatiful multi colors are wonderful to absorb as well as the water reflection there. It's nice that you manged to include the distance background. But i do feel the full pano format has more impact, thus the top/bottom negative space can be cropped. Good infor notes. Hi Chris,
This is a very nice photo of Rethimno. Night photos are not easy to take. The horison (sea level!) doesn't look quite straight but that's just a minor thing.

Once I had a large plate of fried Kalamari in the restorant right in the middle of this photo. It was the best calamari I have ever had, it was cooked to perfection.

We can feel the summer atmosphere in this island! Those sterraces seem to be crowded and full of life. Even in the night, it's a place full of colour. I like the colourful reflections also!

Hi Chris

I know you've taken this without a tripod. So I think you did really well in terms of light management and clarity. But I suppose you know how much better the image would have been with a tripod, an ISO of 100, an aperture of at least f/11 (as high as f/22) and the shutter open for as long as your meter said. As far as composition is concerned, I probably would have focussed more on the group of lights on the right. I hope you don't mind this critique. I like the photo alot, but would love to see what you could have done with a tripod.

πολύ ωραία σύνθεση, είναι υπέροχος ο τρόπος που ξεχωρίζει η ολόφωτη προκυμαία και οι λαμπρές αντανακλάσεις της μέσα στο σκοτάδι της νύχτας. Η αντίθεση είναι συναρπαστική. Μου αρέσουν πάρα πολύ τα φώτα και τα χρώματα, το ιστιοφόρο που διαγράφεται μπροστά στα φώτα και φυσικά η βραδυνή καλοκαιρινή ατμόσφαιρα. Μπράβο και ευχαριστώ!

The spots of blue, green and their reflections create a very nice atmosphere, attracting the eye on the houses. The black of foreground and of the sky is very deep, creating a hihly contrasted picture. Very nice !

Hi Chris,

For an image with so much black there's also so much color! The reflection is beautiful and creates a wonderful ambiance to the scene. I think this would look great as a panoramic layout, to really emphasize the nighttime charm of this setting. A very pleasing photo though, nicely done and informative text. Thanks for sharing.
