The Town of Samos(Vathi),Samos Island

The town of Samos is the capital and the main port of the island and it is situated at the NE end of the island, within the safe bay of Vathi. The actual town has almost been joined with the scenic settlement of Vathi, amphitheatrically arranged on a low hill, whose nice traditional buildings with the tiled roofs go very well along with the neoclassic houses of the town of Samos. Both settlements count some 8500 permanent residents.
Accommodation, eating, entertainment, shopping and any kind of services are available in the town and the visitors will enjoy all facilities necessary for a comfortable staying.

One of the most well known cultural activities of the town of Samos is the Festival of Samos, taking place in summer in honor of the eminent Greek composer and musician Manolis Kalomiris, whose origin was from Samos. Another popular summer event is the Wine Festival, which attracts many people. On the 11 th of November it is celebrated the anniversary of the incorporation of Samos to Greece; various events and a parade are organized in the town. Several local religious feasts (“panigiri”) take place in the capital, on the 6 th of December in honor of the protector saint of the town, Aghios Nicolaos, on the 12 th of December on the name day of Aghios Spyridon, on Friday following Easter at the Monastery of Zoodochos Pighi and on the 31 st of August at the Monastery of Aghia Zoni.

Moving around is easy at the town of Samos; you may use the public buses, running frequently, the taxis as well as rented or private car and motorbikes. As one of the two big ports is found at Vathy, the town of Samos is also connected by ship both with mainland Greece and with several islands.
