Photographer's Note

We had sailed from Mali Lošinj in Croatia and arrived off the littoral of Venice at first light. By the time we had motored into the Lagoon and up to Venice itself, it was still early morning, about 0630 I reckon. As you can see, the crowds had not yet started thronging the Piazzetta San Marco. I suppose this was the first view of Venice that most travellers had in times gone by, and the Lion of St Mark is very prominent on its column. It is certainly a wonderful sight, with the Palazzo Ducale, the striking Campanile di San Marco and the Biblioteca Marciana making an impressive group around the iconic square. Coming into Venice like this should have been such a romantic experience; sadly the only other person on board was another old bloke...
