Photographer's Note

Cloud Gate, a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, is the centerpiece of the AT&T Plaza in Millennium Park within the Loop community area of Chicago.The sculpture and AT&T Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed "The Bean" because of its bean-like shape. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It is 33 feet by 66 feet by 42 feet (10 m × 20 m × 13 m), and weighs 110 short tons.Kapoor's design was inspired by liquid mercury and the sculpture's surface reflects and distorts the city's skyline. Visitors are able to walk around and under Cloud Gate's 12-foot (3.7 m) high arch.

What an imaginative shot. I've seen daytime photos of Cloud Gate, and even critiqued a photo of it. But in this rendering you show a different and very effective aspect. The light management is excellent.

Hello,

It is the first time I see this cloud in a night shot. Good idea, it provides an extra touch of originality. It is a bit fun to guess the limit between the mirror and the reality on the top of the artwork.

Until opened I wouldn't know what to see, but the idea is a superb and unusual, Krzysztof, also well applied that goos idea.

You have captured this beautiful modern sculpture at the very right time, when the nicely illuminated city is reflected in its surfaces with the very aesthetic distortions. Virtually, the composition is panoramic because it shows the parts of this night scene being both in front and behind the photographer. A highly inventive job!

How are you ? Are you well. I haven't forgotten about you. It is quite contrary, I have been very curious to see what kind of images you have brought back to us from Chicago.
When I saw this image, my first impression was " They have done it again" I mean it positively. Only in the states, and maybe in Paris, you find a great artwork exposed outside like this. Golden reflection of the city is stunningly beautiful. Did you touch it? Did you go under it? The image is crystal clear. you do have very steady hands. Was it cold outside? How long did you stay with the object. Is it really very smooth? I have many questions to ask you. It is a great photo of a great object of art. Would you like to go back to see it again? I probably will never get to see it myself, but the impact of your photo is almost as real as the real one. And I am quite happy with it. I love it ! ! ! !

Congratulations for this nice picture. The idea to take the reflection on the sculpture is very good.
The light management is excellent.
Maybe the picture would have been better without the guys on the left side, but it should not be so easy to do.

Czesc Krzysztof,
w mojej ostatniej podrozy do polnocnej Kalifornii mialem przesiadke w Chicago i udalo mi sie na cwile skoczyc do centrum. Wybralem wlasnie fasolke poniewaz byla latwo dostepna metrem plus pogod byla kiepska i widocznosc. Widze ze turystow nie brakuje w tym miejscu nawet noca. Pomimo ze ksztalt niesamowity bardzo trudno sfotografowac fasolke. Zrobilem jej chyba ok 200 zdjec ale z zadnego nie jestem zadowolony.
Nocna pora nadaje jeszcze zupelnie inna atmosfere temu miejscu. Bardzo chcialbym tam byc o blue hour.

Hi Krzysztof,

I really need to get back to Chicago and get a few shots of this myself, what a neat attraction this must be! This is the first time I've seen a picture of it after dark, and it's taken on an entirely new visual and has also added some rather distinct atmosphere. I don't know if you planned it this way or not, but I love how it fades into complete black along the middle left of the frame, obscuring the line of sculpture and nighttime sky. The darker golden and yellow tones add to the mysterious kind of mood reflected, and I really like that you included a small portion of the actual skyline in the background. Really neat effect and brilliant composition. Thanks for the view. Have a nice Sunday.
