Photographer's Note

Where do I even begin with this story? This is a long story but i'll try to make it as short as possible, and I'll add in 2 WS photos, and a link to Ling Tan's most popular Cover Shots at the end of the long note. I chose this as the main photo because I wanted to highlight her elongated long limbs in the vertical composition.

So here I was in NYC, meeting up with our TE friend Brenda. We had emailed and planned on meeting in front of the ATLAS sculpture at a certain time. I had chosen the ATLAS sculpture because I thought I remembered exactly where it was. Well, I was wrong, I couldn't find it.

With the intent on keeping the story short and to the point, we missed each other because I couldn't find the ATLAS, however, I did find it eventually, about an hour or two too late - and Brenda had already left. I don't blame Brenda at all, I took too long and I understand completely.

But my bad luck and bad timing with Brenda paid off in OTHER ways. When I finally located the ATLAS, there was a professional model shoot happening, and guess what - yup, it happened again! I walked into another model on the streets during my vacation!

However, this time I hit the JACKPOT! This is Ling Tan, a SUPERMODEL, world famous cover girl, world famous, A List Super Model. Can you believe that! Amazing! Ling Tan was most popular and most successful in the mid 90's, that was her peak, on runways, cover models, Victoria Secret Model, you name it she did it.

So, just as I walked up to the photo shoot, along with her photographer and her handler, I was able to capture maybe 2 or 3 photos. Then it was over! So Sad. In fact, it was the security guard who pushed them to finish because there were many other tourists wanting to photograph the statue but she was hogging the area.

This was when I got up the courage and actually approached Ling myself, I walked straight up to her and I said "I'd like to photograph you". She looked at me and smiled and said "Ok lets do it"

So she walked right back to the same spot, the security guard just sighed and mumbled something under his breath and walked away hahahaha.

Now, at the time I had on my extreme wide angle lens the 8-16mm, which is the WORST for portraits. But its not like I'm going to ask a Supermodel to wait a moment or two while I change my lens I had to make due with what I had.

Her photographer laid on the ground shooting upwards, I asked him if I could get closer but he said no. So i stood above him while he lay on the ground. I don't mind that Ling was looking directly at the photographers lens and not mine, who cares, this moment was still WAY TOO COOL to care :)

I was literally 2 feet away from a World Famous Super Model and photographing her, just me and the photographer.

Even more amazing was what happened next. After the photo shoot, Ling walked up to ME, she wanted to see the photos I took. She took my camera, was flipping through my photos of her, she said "I like this one, this one, this, one". Of the 15 or so I took, she liked about 4 or 5 specific shots. She then asked me if we could exchange email addresses - um...that would be a YES!

So we did that, she told me she'd like for me to photoshop the one's she pointed out, and email them to her. I did what she requested, I emailed them to her that evening. We had a few emails back and forth, chatted a bit, she appreciated the photos, she was so down to earth and easy to talk to. It was fantastic, what an experience.

And all of this because I was late in finding the meet up spot with Brenda. Brenda and I met the following day, had a wonderful day together, we laughed about this chance meeting with Ling Tan with no hard feelings haha.
