Photographer's Note

It has been almost eighteen years since the September 11 attacks. Almost eighteen years since nearly three thousand people were murdered and the Twin Towers fell. It’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed…

During the years that have followed, more than 2,000 people have also died from September 11 related illnesses, such as cancer, due to exposure to dangerous toxins at Ground Zero. It’s expected that on the 20th anniversary, more people will have died from those illnesses than people who were actually killed on that horrible day. There is a new section of the September 11 memorial site that is dedicated to those who have died in the past eighteen years. It’s called the Memorial Glade, and it was dedicated this past May.

I recently visited the memorial again. As I approached the site, there was a large puddle on the ground that reflected the new One World Trade Center building, also known as the Freedom Tower. Large, concrete planters surround the site. Some have artwork on them. Others, on that particular day, had the quote: “Imagine peace.”

This seems like a fitting scene to share as yet another year passes, and we still hope for peace…
