Photographer's Note

One of my first attempts at learning to "desaturate" most of a photo to black and white - yet leaving a strong color object relatively untouched in the frame. In this image, the flag is desaturated to -30 in The Gimp, and the remainder of the image is desaturated to -85. Slight clone tool editing to remove a small boy at the bottom right who just wouldn't get out of the frame, and a construction crane currently working on the Capitol dome. Notes for Iwo Jima the same as my other photo of this fabulous monument, duplicated here:

Close-up photograph of one of the soldiers of the Iwo Jima memorial in Arlington, Virginia. The Iwo Jima memorial memorial is a recreation of a pulitzer-prize winning photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal of five Marines and a Navy hospital corpsman raising a flag on Feb 23rd, 1945 after invading Iwo Jima. The soldiers' names were: Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon H. Block, Pfc. Franklin R. Sousley, Pfc. Rene A. Gagnon, Pfc. Ira Hayes, and PhM. 2/c John H. Bradley, USN.
