Photographer's Note

Getting up at oh dark "God does this hour really exist?" I headed out of Phoenix for the Superstition Wilderness of the Tonto National Forest. Just north of Apache Junction on highway 88 is the Forest Road that leads to the First Water Trailhead. I stopped a short way in at an unofficial trail and started walking toward the northwest (the iconic) face of these mountains while keeping a wary eye out of rattlesnakes soaking up warmth from heat-retaining rocks.

The long (10 second) exposure I used left a bit of start streaking. A different photo actually managed to capture the light from a meteors brief, fiery, flight through the atmosphere. The light on the mountains is from Phoenix and Mesa light pollution while that on the cactus was a brief light painting with my flashlight.

ISO 800, 10 seconds at f/2.4, 24mm focal length, cropped to remove blurred areas at the left and right sides of the image.
