Photographer’s Note
John Ford established Arizona's Monument Valley as the western movie outdoor set in his John Wayne triology, Fort Apace, Rio Grande, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. The gigantic buttes and monoliths dominate the scene and add a sense of immortality.
Many other movies and tv programs would follow, but purists believe Ford utilized Monument Valley better than anyone else. Ironically, Ford would return to the Valley near the end of his career detailing the American Indians as the heroes instead of the bad-guys, in the tragedy, Cheyenne Autumn.
