Photographer's Note

This is the (eventual) last resting place of Johnny Ramone, who was actually cremated; his wife currently has his remains, and the two plan to one day be interred together here, in his statue, which is one of the more elaborate ones at the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I haven't been here since the '90s, when it had become terribly run-down, due to a lack of funding. It incurred significant damage during the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and was on the verge of bankruptcy, but it's enjoyed a revival after it was purchased by Tyo, LLC in 1998, which invested millions in restorations. They've certainly paid off: founded in 1899, it's still the only cemetery in Hollywood, and prices to be interred here these days ain’t cheap, so it’s once again become prime real estate. The Paramount lot is directly adjacent. True to form, film screenings are still held here, courtesy of Cinespia, which hosts outdoor events on the grassy Fairbanks lawn. Hope to attend one someday!

Classic film enthusiasts, take note: some of the most famous persons in Hollywood's illustrious history are interred here: Cecil B. DeMille, Fay Wray, Tyrone Power, Peter Lorre, Mel Blanc, Mickey Rooney (just recently, in 2014), Douglas Fairbanks and Jr., Rudolph Valentino, and, more recently, Judy Garland, who was reinterred here in the section named for her, Anton Yelchin, most notable for playing Chekov in the new Star Trek movie, who died in a tragic and rather mysterious accident at age 27, and musicians Chris Cornell of Soundgarden/Audioslave, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots and Johnny Ramone, whose ashes will eventually be interred in his statue, along with those of his wife.
