Photographer's Note

I was in Santa Fe last week for a workshop on portrait photography. This course was supposed to be on how to use available light (in other words, no flash or artificial light), but because it was going to be Mardi Gras while we were there, the teacher told us to bring along (or borrow) a flash, as we were going out into the streets that night.

So this is one of the few times in my life I've tried to use a flash (I borrowed a Nikon Speedlight from the school). I still don't like using them, but sometimes you just have to. For this shot, I tilted the flash off to the (camera) right side.

The colorful guy in the center is the band leader. The band and the equally colorful revelers are in the street on their way from the La Fonda hotel to, of all things, a bookstore, where the next party was going on.
