Photographer’s Note

I've been so busy lately without time for TE and I thought I was going to be stuck on 399 photos for ever. Furthermore it was not easy deciding what to post but the recent sad events in the USA made the decision for me even though it is a photo which is not my usual stlye. The photo was taken by the roadside in between Las Vegas and Kingman (Route 66) - could be anywhere really.

J'avais tellement à faire ces derniers temps sans un moment pour TE que je croyais que j'allais rester bloquer sur 399 photos pour toujours. De plus, je n'arrivais pas à me décider quoi poster mais les récents tristes évenements aux USA ont pris la décision pour moi bien que pas mon style habituel. La photo était prise au bord de la route entre Las Vegas et Kingman (Route 66) - pourrait être n'importe où...

Salut Nikki,

Ouais, c'est plutôt d'actualité en effet et c'est très pertinent.

Ce n'est pas une affiche que l'on retrouverait le long de n'importe qu'elle route, en tous cas pas au Canada. C'est sans doute aussi la raison pour laquelle tu l'as prise en photo, parce que ça ne fait pas de sens quand on ne vient pas de ce pays..

Le contexte désertique est pas mal, ça colle aux films américains de gangsters.

Tu colles à l'actualité. Celà ne peut être pris qu'aux US. La barrière, les montagnes pelées au fond, les poteaux électriques renforcent l'image du l'Amérique profonde.

oui en effet c'est de circonstance...je ne sais pas si ce tragique événement va relancer une nouvelle fois le débat sur le port d'armes aux US vu que c'était sur une base militaire mais c'est vrai que c'est un aspect de la culture Américaine que nous européens avons du mal à comprendre.
J'aime bien la photo en tout cas et l'isolement de ce panneau, cette barrière et les poteaux électriques qui amènent de la perspective. Bien vu.

Hello Nikki! It is maybe not your usual style but I do love this kind of photography a lot, I always have, it is maybe not pretty but has a great quality AND it tells us a lot of things. I am not against owning a gun but it has to be in the right hands. It is not only the States that have problems but remember also Zug some years ago when some crazy guy shot wildly around shooting members of the State Government. I guess it is our time, all these years the Swiss Army members had and still have their guns stored away at home without much happening, now it is obviously too dangerous and discussed what we should do. Some thoughts on this rainy Sunday afternoon ... For me this is a great shot, you can work for any magazine as a photo journalist ... Greetings from Zuerich, Barbara.

il est vrai que rester a 399 était un peu bête.....
un excellent contraste dans cette photo choc avec des couleurs saturées et un panneau qui claque a l'écran.
un peu d'encouragement pour les 400 suivantes il serai dommage de s'arrêter a 400

Bueno, pues primero de todo: enhorabuena por las 400 fotos.

Aunque es una lástima que el motivo de escoger la foto sea el que ha sido.
Pese a todo, hiciste la foto cuando esto no era noticia. Quiero decir que supiste ver muy bien un sujeto que tenía y tiene un gran interés.
Y con él hiciste una muy buena composición.

Triste évènement auquel tu fais état. Mais que faire devant la folie meutrière des hommes ?
Ton image est appropriée, prise près des lieux peut-être. Je ne situe pas l'endroit ;o)

What is it with guns in the USA, why would anybody need a full automatic assault rifle in their house, surely it can't be that dangerous to live there.
A poignant photograph in light of the Fort Hood killings.

Congratulations on your 400th post, I'm struggling to get to 100.

my question exactly - why? I have nothing against the guns as such, my father has been a hunter his whole life, and while at school I was on the shooting team. but guns are not toys, or chocolate that you can try to find your favourite taste. there should always be a very real and concrete need for a gun; having it for the sake of just having it as a status symbol doesn't make sense to me.

Hi Nikki,
The American, especially in the rural are have their love affair with the gun, it part of the life style pass on from the olden days, though it is hardly any significant reason for having one anymore, I think, but many still feel they have the right if they choose to. It's a never ending dicussion, I won't even want to engage in the conversation. I have to write an essay in my school year back then about it.
Anyway, this is the first time I saw a photo of the advertisement. Good quality shot as always. Thanks

Hi Nikki,

very good question that you ask - why? I like the typical elements that you combine here - the sand and shrubs, the fences, the phone line - as a backdrop for this thought provoking shot.
