Broadway and The Benson

I didn’t start my theme “Streetscapes of North America” for nothing, so here’s one from Portland. It shows Broadway, seen from the corner of West Burnside Street. Broadway runs straight through the centre of town in a north-south direction.

Seen in the background here is The Benson Hotel from 1912. It has got 287 rooms, making it the seventh largest hotel in Portland and it is said to be one of the best. It was built in Second Empire style.

hello Lars, We will probably see your Dad's version the next year, hahaha. Wonderful building on the corner. Aren't they more beautiful than the new glass structures? But life must go on. Nice signs - probably outdoor equipment or travel agency.

Hello Lars,
Benson är ännu ett hotell som skulle vara för dyrt för min budget. Men det är en fin byggnad som överglänser omgivningen. Den lite enklare byggnaden i mitten har å andra sidan en fin väggmålning. Bilden är tagen från en plats där gatan svänger elegant och är fylld av färggranna fordon.

I like the snow boarder scene high up on the wall. It's quite a striking contrast with the urban scene below. Good sharpness, colour and saturation. Tfs!

Hello Lars,

The photograph shows your skill of sharp exposures.
The whole scene has great clarity and allows us to peruse the buildings easily.
These are not your modern skyscrapers, these show a classy, early 20th century style.
I love the deco on the upper windows.

The presence of the trucks and cars is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the buildings. The light is giving good rendering of the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Lars, a super sharp street scene. The light was perfect at highlighting lots of lovely details.
The upper part of the Benson Hotel seems to have been influenced by French architecture,(I am not sure what Second Empire style is, I will have to look it up!) and is quite beautiful.

Hello Lars,
I like this street scene; it has a little of everything. The hotel has impressive architecture, and shows its age nicely. On the same street you have a sports club and a bar with nude women. That's quite a mix! I like the artwork on the side of the building in the middle, too.

Lars, that quarter in Portland attracts many tourists for its architectural beauty. The imposant Benson hotel built in Second empire style commands respect. Beautiful streetscape, excellent light.

Looks like you have also captured a Strip Club on the right haha. Did you visit? I wonder what this view was like many decades ago. I like the look of the large buildings, large and square, bold. another interesting and effective street shot.

There are some very active things going on this street especially at night. It was once quite the "Broadway" center for plays and shows in its day. Nice image of a historical pert of Portland. drt100 David

Typical American downtown scenery, superbly collected Lars.
Blue and red painted vehicles and the blue mural above the street added vivid tones to the mostly cold colors of the buildings.

Hi Lars,
I do prefer always the nature than architecture but having said that, this is a beautiful street scene.
The buildings are so typical American. They resemble with style the ones which I remember seeing in NYC or San Francisco.
Great amalgam of buildings, well captured here. Some colorful traffic decorates it nicely in the foreground.
